Johanna’s Small Nursery Organization Tips

While attending the Big City Moms event last week, I met many soon-to-be new mamas who were asking for tips on how to design and organize a nursery in a small space. Here are some of my favorite tips.

There is no need for a changing table. A dresser topped with a changing pad works perfectly. Products that are used frequently should be easily accessible. Use the top drawer of your dresser to store diapers, creams and wipes or put them in cute baskets.

You’ll be surprised by the amount of laundry a baby can produce. Keep laundry hampers in reach of the changing area. Using the space under the crib for storage is a huge space saver. I store diapers under mine. Hang an over-the-door shoe organizer to store items like onesies, baby blankets and burp cloths. Take advantage of the vertical space of the room by stacking books and toys on shelves. Storage baskets and bins help keep a nursery looking clutter-free. As soon as your baby has moved onto the next size of clothing, get rid of the old stuff. Donate!

Do you have any space-saving tips for all the soon-to-be moms out there? I’d love to hear from you.

These ideas are just great. I also think that the space under the crib is underutilized and if you start using that, it would be a huge space saver!

Thanks for the great mention – the best part of the zig zag baskets are the lids – you can hide all the mess!

I think that doing away with the changing table is a great way to save on space. Thanks for pointing that out!

Getting rid of the diaper bin to safe space was best idea ever. You just regularly take the used diapers out.

We use the shoe organizer on the back of the door for all my daughter’s shoes, hats, beanies, hair bands, creams, monthly onesie stickers, and burp cloths. As time passed, we also realized we didn’t need an entire wardrobe for each infant clothing size. We started limiting infant clothes to 12 outfits. Limiting the clothes per size greatly cut down on what to store in the nursery too.

Loved all the ideas! The space under a crib is the best area to utilize as a storage. It helps to hide things from view yet access whenever needed. The best part is that you’re utilizing a space which will otherwise be reduced to just a dust collector. Other storage ideas that I use personally include hanging pretty carry bags behind doors. They look cute and can hold a lot of baby stuff like toys and teethers that you need occasionally. Simple shelves (the same color as the wall) placed at a height where the baby can’t reach are also extremely helpful to store lamps, books and delicate things.
