We’ve been designing gender-neutral nurseries for a long time, and parents almost always ask us what their options are for wall colors other than light yellow or mint green. Most of our clients choose to know the gender of their baby beforehand, but those few who don’t seem overwhelmed by the thought of designing the nursery without knowing what the base color will be. If you find yourself in this situation, fret not! We’re here to tell you that there are many options for gender-neutral nursery color schemes without ever going near pastel yellows and greens.
We want to share with you our favorite way of designing a gender-neutral space—we like to use muted colors in the background with pops of accent colors throughout the room. And no, the accent colors don’t have to be light yellow or green either!
This modern nursery is a cool gray with pops of teal. The white crib helps brighten up the space, and everything else can be completely customized once baby arrives. Those fun hexagon wall shelves can house either little trucks and airplanes or little ponies and hair bows—either would work! Once the baby is born, the space will fill up with toys, clothes and other stuff that will all be more gender specific, so the room itself can really serve as a canvas.
We love how soft and warm this nursery is. The warm wood tone of the crib looks great against the taupe background color, and the artwork has some pops of nature-inspired colors—always a safe bet for a gender neutral space.

Want something a little bolder? This high-contrast nursery has a darker shade of gray on the walls that is balanced by bright white built-ins. The fun abstract painting has no gender allegiance, and it allows for many colors to be pulled into accents around the room.
