For holidays and celebrations, I love making things—decorations for the shop, gifts to give and cards to send. Valentine’s Day is one of my favorites! I made sure to get a head start on my “holiday crafting” and made handmade Valentine’s Day cards for my family and friends.
This is a great activity for your little ones to work on with you. You can spend quality time together, get creative and have some fun!
Materials:
Assorted Fabric Scraps, Felt and Ribbon
Card Stock (you can also buy pre-cut folded cards or postcards)
Fabric and Paper Scissors
Pinking Shears
Glue Stick
Markers or Pencils
Step 1: Draw or trace hearts on a piece of cardboard or an empty file folder to create a template. You will see I cut out three different sizes of hearts for my cards on an old file folder.
Step 2: Trace your hearts on the different fabrics using a marker or pencil. I trace on the wrong side of the fabric. I recently discovered these Frixion Pens that not only work on paper but also work on fabric, and they disappear when ironed. You can find them at your local stationery store or Staples.
Step 3: Using your regular fabric scissors or pinking shears cut out all of your hearts. I opted for the pinking shears because it creates a unique edge, and the fabric won’t fray.
Step 4: I used large sheets of card stock in different colors and cut them in half to create my folded cards. The size of the card is up to you; you just need a clean surface to work with. Apply a thin layer of glue to the back of your heart, and stick it onto your card wherever you would like it.
I layered different sized hearts on top of each other and then stuck it to the cards. You can just glue them on top of each other, but since I had the sewing machine handy, I stitched around the smallest heart to secure it. I also liked the look of some stitches as an added finishing touch.
Voila! Your valentines are ready! In addition to the hearts, I took some scraps of ribbon I had and glued a strip to the bottom edge of the card. I also covered the front of a few cards with a piece of fabric and felt and trimmed it with some ribbon. You can really get creative as you like. Have fun and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thanks for this easy Valentine’s craft idea. My kids can do this and give to their teachers.

My kids and I used this to make their Valentine’s Day cards for their friends. But we didn’t have scrap fabric, we used old magazines for the printed hearts instead.
