Every now and then, I’ll get to design a room that I secretly want for myself. This was the case for this nature-inspired girl’s room that I created for my client in Newport Beach. This room was for a very sweet yet mature nine-year old girl who wanted a space that was pretty and breezy with touches of lavender.
Wall Mural | Chandelier | Purple Knit Blanket | Sheer Curtains
The main statement in this room is that amazing lavender forest wall mural. In person, this mural is so stunning and has a hand-drawn feel to it. It really makes the whole space! If you look closely, you can see all the detailing in the wallpaper design. There’s actually a lot of color aside from lavender in there—lots of blues, greens and touches of pink, too.
Bed (Similar) | Bed Canopy | Nightstands
The other showstopper in this room is the totally custom made tree bookcase in the corner. We searched for just the right tree trunk to use (yes, it’s real!) and built the shelves to match. It was important to find a tree that had lots of natural knots and inconsistencies to really bring a natural look to the space.
I really wanted to create an eclectic environment, so I chose pieces in a variety of colors and finishes for a mismatched natural look. The bed is wrought iron, the nightstands are two-tone, and the tree shelf is unfinished.
On the other side of the room, my client wanted a space where her daughter could do homework, play and display her art and poetry. I created a little nook for her with a table and some beautiful pinboards where she can pin up her latest achievements.
Dresser | Lamp | Table | Chairs | Pinboards | Dried Lavender Hanging
There are lots of little details throughout the room, like these pretty brass wall hooks for her to hang little collected items and necklaces.
There’s a little entryway into the room as well, where we placed a woven wall hanging and a floor length mirror. I love the color variation in this hanging (unfortunately it’s not available for sale anymore).
In addition to lavender, we used gold as an accent color throughout the space. This gold lamp really plays up both the gold and the nature element quite nicely. I just love how this room turned out!

I love your tree shelf! We are looking to make something similar. What kind of wood did you use and how did you find it? Thanks! It’s beautiful!!
Morgan
Did you have to attach the log to the wall anyway?

Hi Morgan, yes it is very well secured to the wall! The log is actually cut into pieces that sit on each shelf, and everything is attached together and screwed into the walls.

Hi Melanie,
We hired a contractor and he pulled samples for us from a remnant yard. It was not easy to find!! Then he sanded and oiled it so it would be smooth with no splinters.
