It’s no secret that Melisa is a self proclaimed “organization snob”. Her trim email inbox and tidy computer files make me blush and don’t even get me started on her closet. After a bit of self examination I came to the conclusion that I need to work harder in the organization department. First up were the ever growing pile of toys that were quickly taking over our entire house. I love the fact that the boxes come in a deep chocolate color which was mature enough to match the decor of our living room. The hamper is another favorite. I really like the storage boxes, so my storage tip is more like a revelation. Humans are natural collectors, especially kids. If you want to be organized, you have to work at it continually. If you are planning to let things go, be sure to designate a good chuck of time later to catch up. It helps to have a system in place, but if not, you can always adapt from others and over time to see what works best for you. Less is more. Also, making a list is helps. See realsimple.com for more tips.

These boxes are great, and will really help to get my sister-in-law’s nursery in order before baby comes in January! One trick I’ve learned from a friend is to use an old (repurposed/used) bookshelf to store toys rather than a toy box. The shelves keep the toys visible and you can easily see which toys are being played with and which are not (and nothing gets buried at the bottom of the box), so you can tell which toys to rotate out and which to keep.

storage tip:
the small clear bins are great for seperating toys like bloacks, legs, crayons, matchbox cars…
on the front of each bin, tape a photo of what is inside to the inside of the bin so your kids can see what is supposed to go in the bin when cleaning up. Also makes it easier for them to find their toys instead of ransacking through all the belongings in search of something specific.
