UNICEF Game

With the holiday shopping season upon us, why not give a gift this year that also gives back? Here are a few of my top selections for holiday gifts for children that will make both the recipient of the gift and someone else in need smile when purchased. Almost everyone knows about TOMS, but in case you don't—with every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One. They have shoes for everyone in the family, from your newborn to dad! ever/after will donate 25% of the net profit from every garment that you buy to the cause of your choice. They have partnered with charities that share their vision of creating powerful and sustaining change in the lives of children in need. My son is obsessed with the pants in their collection. They are so comfortable (and the cut is fabulous); he rarely wants to wear anything else. The UNICEF website has an assortment of gifts, including puzzles and books, which donate to the UNICEF and help children around the world. My personal favorite is the I Never Forget a Face Matching Game. It helps teach children that people look beautiful and different around the world. It is also an Oppenheimer Best Toy Award Winner. If helping children has a special place in your heart, then another great gift resource and foundation is FEED. Each Feed Our Small World Bag purchased helps generate funding to UNICEF to help supply children …

Rockin Rider Brown Pony

To get us in the mood for the holidays, over the next few weeks, our Project Nursery experts and contributors will be sharing favorite holiday gifts that either they received as a child or their children received. Join in on the conversation. What was your favorite gift?   Just like almost every little girl, I went through phases of toy obsession—baby dolls, barbies, but the one that stuck the longest was definitely horses. Every little girl loves horses, right? Dear Santa, what do we want for Christmas? A pony. What do I want at my birthday party? A pony. Yes, I'm from Texas, but it's not like we are born with cowgirl hats on and boots. (Or are we?) I remember begging my parents for a pony. BEGGING. I was sure it could just live in the backyard, in our small-suburbia backyard. We could tie it to the swing set, and I could ride it in circles in the cul-de-sac each day after school. Now as an adult, I think I'm going to blame my obsession on my mother. She rode horses as a young girl too, back in the day (like waaaaaaay back in the day, haha, sorry mom) when you were allowed to ride horses on the side of the road. Okay, that might just be a Texas thing. In any case, she introduced me to horseback riding at a very young age, and one spectacular Christmas, she surprised my sister and me with a horse, errr, pony …

Cabbage Patch Kid

To get us in the mood for the holidays, over the next few weeks, our Project Nursery experts and contributors will be sharing favorite holiday gifts that either they received as a child or their children received. Join in on the conversation. What was your favorite gift?   When I think of my most special holiday gift from childhood there is one clear winner—the Cabbage Patch. My fabulous grandfather, rest his soul, waited in line for hours so I could unwrap my very own doll, complete with birth certificate and powder perfect smell. I was over the moon. Collecting dolls or action figures is a classic passion for kids everywhere.  Here are some of this holiday's hottest collectibles. American Girl dolls are a great substitute for the original Cabbage Patch. With stores across the country, the experience of selecting a doll, outfitting her in all sorts of clothes and taking care of her is all the rage (especially when she kind of looks like you). Little boys are not immune to the lure of collecting. Action figures in their original sense are always in style, but when I came across the Blammoids Collectibles at Fao Schwartz, I flipped. Measuring only 2.5-4" (yes a choking hazard for the under 3 crowd) this modern day take on the superhero is totally fun.

Giraffe-Inspired Baby Shower

I have to admit, I sometimes take a sneak peek at the Project of the Week picks to see if I can predict who the winner is going to be, but this week our readers kept me in the dark until the end. It looks like our readers were split on which project they "liked" best. Congrats to caroline taylor for being our readers pick for Project of the Week! Playmobil Christmas Room

To get us all in the holiday spirit, over the next few weeks, we're going to be sharing some of our favorite holiday gifts with you from either our own childhoods or from our children's. Hopefully, they'll inspire you as you shop for holiday gifts for your own kids. I'm stealing the title from my brother, who, when he was little, would say each and every year, "This is the best Christmas ever!" One of my most treasured gifts as a child was the wooden dollhouse that my dad built for me. I loved playing with that dollhouse for years. I kept my house mainly furnished with Playmobil, particularly their Victorian collection (sadly, no longer in circulation). Oh, I loved that stuff! Nice and durable, it ensures that your kids can actually play with their dollhouse rather than just admire it. And look, they even have Christmas settings! Playmobil Christmas Room Little boys and girls alike enjoy playing with dollhouses. Who wouldn't love pretending with miniature versions of the things in their own home? These days there are plenty of options suitable for both boys and girls. But if your little boy has already moved into the dreaded avoid anything girly stage, a toy garage can offer the same benefits of pretend play. And, hey, your little girl may love it too.  My mom begged her parents for a toy garage when she was little, and she got one. 1. The Playmobil 1.2.3. Farm House is perfect for little folks; …
