Are Expensive Cribs Worth the Money?

Let’s face it—there are a lot of cribs out there that are stunning, beautiful and very, very expensive. A lot of my clients ask me whether or not it is worth it to spend so much money on the crib. The answer is, unfortunately, not so straightforward. There are a lot of things to consider when you’re shopping for a crib, and if you find yourself debating about the investment, you’re not alone! Here are some questions to ask yourself before you take the plunge and purchase an expensive crib.

Is it actually good quality? If you’ve decided to make the investment, make sure you’re getting a quality product. Read online reviews, call the manufacturer with any questions, request samples and try to go see the crib in person at a local baby store to inspect its quality and safety features.

Will it stretch your budget? If you haven’t already, it’s a great idea to write out a budget for your whole nursery project. If you’re eyeing a crib that’s pricey, make sure it won’t stretch your budget in a way that will make you uncomfortable or that you might regret later.

Is it gender neutral? If you’re going to splurge on a fancy crib, you might want to consider getting one that’s gender neutral. That way, you can use it again for your next child and get some additional mileage out of it. If you really want the gender specific design features, just understand that you may not opt to reuse it later.

Are you being realistic about the timeline? Most parents end up using the crib for about two years. If it converts to a toddler bed, you can get a little more time out of it, but many parents choose to go straight into a twin or full size bed. Think about your plans, and be honest with yourself about how long you will actually need the crib. Also keep in mind that it is difficult to sell used cribs because of safety risks.

If you’ve considered all the points above and still want to splurge, then congratulations! If you’ve decided you don’t want to make a big investment, then there are still plenty of options out there for quality cribs that are decently priced. Happy shopping!
