Design Reveal: Liam’s Lair

Little 2 month old Liam is one lucky dude. Thanks to his mother’s love of great patterns, Liam enjoys a bright and edgy room inspired by the modern and luxe designs of Missoni. I too love their textiles and home collection and am still upset over a set of pillows I didn’t snatch up while on a London holiday years ago. Guess I’ll have to get my Missoni fix with this fun nursery mom Jill made possible by mixing big ticket splurge items with some great steals.

What was your inspiration for the room?
My inspiration was the Missoni fabric. Much like Rachel Zoe, I DIE for Missoni. Fortunately, I am a Design Consultant for a store that carries Missoni fabrics. I wanted the room to be gender neutral since we are hoping to have more kids one day. I think it works for both boy and girl, using turquoise as the highlighting color.

What best describes your decorating style?
Modern, eclectic, and finding ways to make each room unique. I love rooms that have a fresh new idea truly make them unique and special.

Please share with us your choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc.
The storage blocks we constructed and designed. I couldn’t find a storage unit that I like for the space. It was a great project that is very unique to the room. They swivel 360 degrees and are the perfect size for the old school locker bins that hold diapers, blankets, bibs, etc. The old school locker bins I purchased at Land of Nod.

The crib is an Oeuf Sparrow crib in grey. The color and simplistic style is perfect complement to the Missoni colors and pattern. The Missoni fabric is used for the crib bedding. I ordered it through Scandia Down KC by Terrasi Home where I work. I used Make Room for Baby Kit to fabricate the linens. I love the idea of a slip cover for the bumper pad so I can wash the bumper when it gets dirty. Simply genius. The rocker/glider we had customized in the turquoise/black combination. We ordered the Peyton Glider through USA Baby. Since we were limited in space, the room is only 10 x 10 ft, so I had to really limited the big items in the room. I wanted the turquoise to pop from the room and the glider was the perfect piece to do that!

The two mini lamps I covered in extra Missoni fabric. The lamps are from Pier 1. I love the mini size because it puts off the perfect amount of light and the two lights under the two letter art pieces makes for perfect symmetry. The main artwork in the room are letters from mom and dad. We each wrote Liam a personal letter and framed it with a turquoise blue outline painted around it. It was a great way to personalize art inexpensively and something Liam can always take with him. We wrote the letters and framed it and then let each other read it with promises not to change the letter once it was framed. It was a really fun project! The mobile was a DIY project also. I found the wire pre made at Genius Jones. I took family pictures along with black and white photos and cut them into shapes. I back the photos with colored fabric paper to match the Missoni fabric. The sheepskin rug is also from Scandia Down KC. The yellow hint in the sheepskin works perfectly with the fitted crib sheet and adds a bit of softness to the room. I didn’t want a huge rug because the room is rather small so the shape works great.

We painted the room white because we didn’t want to compete with the square painted turquoise that highlights the artwork letters. The white is also refreshing and makes the room appear bigger and brighter. It also works great with the sheer window treatments. The window sheers are from WestElm. They provide a great sheerness that lets the light shine through and the little diamond mirrors throughout provide the perfect amount of reflection.

What is your favorite item(s) in the room?
The custom designed and built storage building blocks. It was such a fun project made by us and although it took a bit of time and trial and error it was well worth it. It was exactly what I wanted for the space. I also cherish the dresser and side table which were both my pieces from my baby room. The dresser used to be painted pink with stencils on it! Amazing what paint and new knobs can do! I also love the Missoni fabric used in the crib bedding and lamp shades. I wanted the bedding to be unique and it was possible with the help of the make room for baby kit.

Is there anything else you would like PN readers to know?
Designing this nursery was an absolute blast! Combining both vintage refinished pieces and modern bedding can make for a truly unique one of a kind room. Try to think of ways to incorporate your own vision to make your nursery unique and personal. It will make for the long nights awake much more enjoyable!
