Family travel isn’t something we dive into a lot over here at Project Nursery. However, with a gaggle of growing kids amongst the team, we have turned to each other more and more for great travel ideas with an obvious emphasis on family friendly itineraries. Here’s the bottom line—if you’re a family that loves the mountains, Big Sky Resort should be at the top of your list this ski season.
This past spring I had the chance to travel to Montana with Momtrends and Gotham Love to experience all that Big Sky has to offer. I was seriously impressed and was planning my return visit before my flight home had even departed! Here’s a few reasons why I think you should visit Big Sky.
Getting to Big Sky is Easy! The first thing I noticed when I landed at the Bozeman airport in Montana was how clean the airport was. My flight from San Francisco was surprisingly quick and easy, and I made a mental note that the whole travel day seemed totally low-stress. My Kaart airport shuttle to the resort was waiting for me, and even with all my gear, everything went smoothly. I loved the fact that no rental car was needed; instead I could admire the stunning beauty of the Montana mountains on my 55 minute ride to the resort.
A Wide Range of Accommodations. Once I found the ladies and got settled in our three bedroom condo at the Black Eagle Lodge, we took a stroll through the slope side village. If you stay at any of the accommodations at the resort (there is a ton of options from hotels to condos to full homes), everything is accessible by shuttle or short walk. That evening we went into the town, just a five minute drive away, for a casual bite and some vino before getting to bed early. We had a big ski day ahead of us!
Did Someone Say Skiing? Waking up to the crisp mountain air was something I had forgotten how much I loved. Our day was spent skiing, skiing and more skiing! Did you know that Big Sky has an average of two acres of terrain per skier? That’s a lot of space with an incredible 5800+ total acres of terrain and 36 lifts. Since I’m an intermediate skier, what I really appreciated about Big Sky was that there was plenty of wide open space to practice my skills without tons of traffic whizzing by me and nearly no lift lines.
The Big Sky ski instructors are fantastic, and it was a total luxury to have a private instructor to ease me back into ski mode. I made it a point to check out the programs they offer for kids. Children ages 6 and under ski FREE, and ski programs range from Small Fry Try for ages 2-3 all the way up to ski school for ages 4-17. I have to mention the brand new Ramcharger 8 lift, which is the most modern, high-speed luxury lift in the US, complete with weatherproof bubble and comfy seats. It makes riding that chair lift a total treat.
Give Me All The Western Vibes. While Big Sky isn’t quite as built-up and ritzy as some of the other premium resorts around the country, I found its authentic charm a real selling point. From the laidback village to the rustic-chic Lone Mountain Ranch, you could find a very chill to a more upscale vibe. And since we’re all friends here, I’ll fully admit my favorite part of skiing is Après ski! I simply fell in love with the cute and charming mountain bars and restaurants.
A highlight for me was our one-night stay at the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club. The lodge restaurant, Horn & Cantle, was absolutely gorgeous, and the Fort Peaks Playhouse would have easily been my kids’ favorite part of the trip. One thing to note is that the Montage Big Sky has broken ground at the Spanish Peaks enclave and will be opening in 2021. This might be a good choice for someone looking for a total luxe ski experience in Montana.
Something For Everyone. For our last day at Big Sky, we took a crack at Nordic Skiing. It was so much fun trying something out of my comfort zone, and the three of us ladies had a lot of laughs watching each other slip and slide on the course. Snow-shooing, tubing and a full spa are just a few other activities that can be enjoyed if you’re not a downhill skier. Another highlight was our final Big Sky Yurt dinner, which was at the top of the mountain! You ride up in a snowcat and eat by candlelight in a yurt—a must do!
I’ll 100% be returning to Big Sky, and I can’t wait to bring the whole family with me. If you’d like to plan a trip to Montana be sure to check out Visit Montana or feel free to leave a comment below, and I’d be happy to help. Big thanks to all the amazing women over at Big Sky Resort that made my trip unforgettable. Cheers to a fantastic ski season ahead!

Hello, what month is the best time to visit Big Sky? March ?
Thank you,
Stephen
Pam
Hey Stephen, Big Sky gets a ton of snow early and ski conditions are steady through March. Opening day is coming up in late November but I’d recommend a visit sometime in Feb/March. We were actually there the first week of April and there was still great snow and almost NO crowds but they were getting ready to wrap up the season a few weeks later. Montana is beautiful and there are a ton of other activities besides downhill skiing. – Pam
