A Vintage Vibe with Modern Appeal

One of the most common questions I get from my design clients is about how to achieve a vintage look without ending up with a nursery that looks, well, old. The best way to incorporate a vintage feel is by adding in vintage elements here and there but not throughout the entire space. Also, the items don’t actually have to be vintage, but can be vintage-inspired or a combination of different styles, like a vintage art print in a modern frame. Here are some of my favorite finds for both vintage and vintage-inspired nursery decor that are so colorful, fun and retro, you’ll want them in every room of the house!

These stunning lamps from Retro Print Revival are inspired by the ever-popular mid-century modern craze. They combine a classic mid-century base with colorful vintage-inspired fabrics on the shades. There are so many options for sizes and colors, which is always a huge plus when you’re designing a nursery.

These vintage map dresses from RH Baby & Child may look familiar, and that’s because Project Nursery founder Melisa Fluhr has one in her own daughter’s nursery—you can even find the same style Melisa chose in The Project Nursery Shop! Each dress is hand-folded using vintage maps and framed in a sleek white frame, which adds a little modernity to the piece.

One of my favorite new brands is Rocker Refined. They create extremely unique rocking chairs using classic and retro frames, mixed prints and a little edge.

For a softer look, the internet is full of options for vintage art, like these tropical botanical prints. You can frame vintage art in a newer frame to give it a fresh new look, even if the piece is worn or faded. Don’t limit yourself to botanicals—you can search for vintage maps, piano book covers, old photos or even scraps of vintage wallpaper or fabrics.

I love that you picked a chair from Rocker Refined because we used one of her chairs in our very modern nursery. It added a fun classic style to our otherwise very modern style! We could also customize it to fit our color. We have a purple nursery which makes it very hard to find items to match.
