Books are a huge deal in my house. They’re not just reserved for bedtime; my kids love to stop and read a book throughout the day. We check out books by the dozen at the library, not to mention the books we continue to add to our permanent collection.
Bear Hug by Katharine McEwen, released today, combines the three things I look for in a children’s book: a sweet story with a little bit of learning all paired with beautiful images. See how you can add this book to your own permanent collection below.
The story follows the natural cycle of a bear finding his way in the world, just as his parents taught him, and meeting a partner to start the cycle over on their own. It’s a lovely story of family and tradition through the changing seasons.
My oldest is a nature lover and science connoisseur, and while non-fiction is his go-to material, I love sneaking in books like Bear Hug, which allow him both the warm and fuzzy story along with just enough facts about life as a bear to keep him satisfied.
The illustrations are beautiful—Katharine McEwen has illustrated many books over her career and her talent is evident in the lush landscapes and sweet details. Paired with the lulling cadence of the language, the illustrations will captivate even younger listeners.
As a writer, a reader and a lover of books, I want to instill the same appreciation for good story and beautiful images in my kids. Books like Bear Hug make my job easy.
