Best Hanukkah Ever: The Cabbage Patch!

To get us in the mood for the holidays, over the next few weeks, our Project Nursery experts and contributors will be sharing favorite holiday gifts that either they received as a child or their children received. Join in on the conversation. What was your favorite gift?

When I think of my most special holiday gift from childhood there is one clear winner—the Cabbage Patch. My fabulous grandfather, rest his soul, waited in line for hours so I could unwrap my very own doll, complete with birth certificate and powder perfect smell. I was over the moon. Collecting dolls or action figures is a classic passion for kids everywhere.  Here are some of this holiday’s hottest collectibles.

American Girl dolls are a great substitute for the original Cabbage Patch. With stores across the country, the experience of selecting a doll, outfitting her in all sorts of clothes and taking care of her is all the rage (especially when she kind of looks like you).

Little boys are not immune to the lure of collecting. Action figures in their original sense are always in style, but when I came across the Blammoids Collectibles at Fao Schwartz, I flipped. Measuring only 2.5-4″ (yes a choking hazard for the under 3 crowd) this modern day take on the superhero is totally fun.
