Contemporary Nursery Design [VIDEO]

An energetic and clean contemporary nursery in Toronto’s east end town of Leslieville. What a joy it was to work on this project, and a perfect baby boy it’s for! This bold space has so much character. I was inspired to use a monochromatic palette which is reflected in the FLOR carpet tiles and Flensted mobile. With pops of colour and customized furniture, this streamline nursery is hip, modern and the ideal space for mom, dad and baby to enjoy!

Li’l Lumberjack Birthday Party

For Henry’s first birthday, as we are entering the colder months and plaid seemed apropos, we decided on a “Li’l Lumberjack” theme. Decor included red-and-black buffalo plaid, wood accents, a retro red “logging” truck, faux pine trees and pinecones. The menu was also lumberjack-inspired, featuring “lumberjack” chili (with assorted toppings such as Black Forest bacon), Maine Root sodas, apple crisp, “tree” nuts, pretzel “logs” and pretzel “twigs, S’mores mix, carrot “sticks” and celery “sticks” with hummus and ranch dip. The cake was red-and-black plaid, topped with a moose and two pine trees. It also featured an ax decorated with the number 1.
Guests were encouraged to wear plaid and facial hair (real or otherwise.) The younger set made their own paper beards and also built cabins out of Lincoln Logs.
On one wall we displayed black-and-white photos from each month of Henry’s life from newborn to 11 months. On another we displayed his newborn onesie and diaper contrasted with this 12-month onesie and diaper. A great way to show how much he’s grown over the past year.
I’ve been using the hashtag #ohhenry on Instagram, so we also displayed a bucket of Oh Henry candy bars. I was excited to find the buffalo plaid bucket at Target for $3.
As a nod to a lumberjack’s lunch pail, we filled a large lidded basket with goodies displayed in paper bags: pretzels, trail mix, S’mores mix.

Hugh’s Modern Nursery

Creating a nursery for our first child made for an exciting DIY project in our newly adopted city of Charlotte, North Carolina. As architecture and art enthusiasts (Mom is an architectural historian), we favor clean lines, abstract forms, and neutral hues with pops of color. Using many items we already owned, including artwork and textiles by family and friends, and a few newly-purchased “baby” items, like a crib and changing table accessories, we created a cool, modern space that any child (or adult) would love. The best part of the room? We managed to stay within our $1000 budget!

A Pink and Gray Nursery fit for a Princess

We wanted to create a nursery fit for a Princess! My husband and I love Disney, so we made sure to sprinkle Disney Princesses throughout the room. The art above the crib includes songs lyrics from four Disney Princesses (Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, and Giselle from Enchanted). A special wardrobe for our little princess, three Disney princess dresses (worn by  Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Belle), hangs from the shelf on the wall. A tulle crib skirt and chandelier help to make the nursery fit for a princess! We wanted the room to be Pink, Grey, and White, but included some fun polka dots as a little surprise in the closet (we hand painted each polka dot with a circle stencil!). Five Disney Princess hang from the mobile above the crib, which plays “It’s a Small World.”

Baby Girl Woodland Nursery

I wanted the nursery that was traditional with and a little whimsical but not typical baby decor so when I settled on a woodland theme I knew I had a big project ahead of me. It’s really difficult finding baby decor that isn’t bright pastels or really cartoony. Plus, all the inspiration rooms I found where very heavily boy themed so I had to find my own inspiration for this room and pieced this room together, little by little, over 5-6 months

Beach Baby Nursery

I wanted to create a calm, bright, airy, beachy nursery for our baby. Using neutral colors, woven textures, and blue hues to achieve the look I was going for. I had dreamed of designing a nursery for my baby for my whole life, and making this dream a reality was just so much fun. We knew we were having a little boy and I have always loved the beach, so it was fun to throw in some beachy accents without making it too “themed”.
