Baby Boy Rockin’ Nursery

Description

A rockin' music-themed baby boy nursery for our first son, Luis Manuel

Design Inspiration

My husband and I are both musicians so we wanted to incorporate musical elements into our son's nursery without being too over-the-top (this is something we hope he'll grow into).

Decorating Style

Our style is very sleek, modern and simple though I must admit that this room has a bit of whimsy in it.

Project Details

We chose a light baby blue and espresso brown for the nursery colors – light blue on the walls, espresso furniture and white crown molding to give the room a finished look. The color inspiration came from the organic crib bedding by Lambs & Ivory. The furniture (crib, armoire and changing table) is from Baby Appleseed’s Davenport collection in the espresso finish and ten trees were planted in Luis’ name through a reforestation project to replace some of the wood used to make his furniture (pretty cool, huh). Over the changing table we installed a floating shelf unit from IKEA. We have a severe lack of floor space so we had no where to put a bookcase for knick-knacks and more importantly, books for the baby so this was an easy solution to that problem. Don’t worry, folks – it’s bolted into concrete with some heavy duty hardware since it’s hung on an outside-facing wall of the house. Because we live in South Florida, which is awfully close to the Everglades, we tend to get lots of mosquitoes. So we opted for a canopy-style mosquito net to protect the baby from creepy crawlers. It hides the painting I made for him, but I’d rather he not get eaten alive by bugs. The room's finishing touches include pictures of our parents and brothers and sisters right by the crib so the baby can see his family, most of which live far away. We also have some music inspired artwork and hung a CD and LP of some of our favorite recording artists. My childhood teddy bear and the cake topper from the baby shower, a baby converse sneaker, also make an appearance in the room.

Favorite Items

My favorite item in the room is the black acoustic bass hung on the wall above the glider. It is the guestbook from our wedding, which our guests signed with a silver marker.

Advice

This is a fairly small room so we were nervous about the dark furniture making it look even smaller. Keeping the walls very light and a light, neutral carpet definitely made a difference.  Also, be sure to take advantage of wall and closet space as best you can.
