Photo books make some of the best presents. I love making these books as holiday, birthday or "thank you for the weekend" gifts—it takes me down memory lane, and I get so much pleasure putting them together. If you're looking for a creative gift to give this year and have some spare time on your hands (insert giant sigh here), these are some of my favorite sites for you to check out. As a photographer, I've made professional photo books of my work in Paris from Blurb, and let me tell you, they do not disappoint. They make beautiful books fit for any level of dollars you're willing to pay. The downloadable software is easy to use and you don't have to be tech savvy to do so. I'm a huge fan of  Pinhole Press. I can't wait to get started with my annual "recap of the year" family book that I make for my mother-in-law (I've got my eye on the large purple one), and I also just received my photo holiday cards I ordered from them—two thumbs up! Shutterfly is an easy and foolproof site. You can choose various layouts and background themes and knock out a book in no time. Plus, they always seem to have a discount code on their site, which is an added bonus if you want to save a few dollars. My mom loves Kodakgallery. She creates photo books and puts together the greatest collages of our family. With a click here and there, you really …

Our Dream Foreclosure Monthly Baby Picture

I know we've all seen them—photos documenting the monthly growth of a cute little baby. There are all sorts of ways to do it and lots of creative ideas floating around waiting to be grabbed by all you imaginative parents. I love seeing the new ideas mix in with the old. One of our readers, Michelle from Our Dream Foreclosure, came up with this clever idea to add a new piece of clothing to her son's picture each month so that at the end of the year he'll be fully clothed (gotta love the boxers!). image from Our Dream Foreclosure Erica, from Erica's Bloggity Blog, dressed her son in the same sleeper for each picture to document his growth. So cute and funny! image from Erica's Bloggity Blog There's always the good old-fashioned change the number on a onesie route. Young House Love photoshopped their daughter's onesie, but you can also make your own or buy decals (we like Sticky Bellies). YHL also changed up the background using different fabric backdrops. Oh, they also photographed every week! image from Young House Love Personally, I used the put your kid in a onesie in the same chair next to the same stuffed animal method to document my son's growth via monthly pictures. Some of my favorite shots are the candid ones (like the one below) that occur when you are desperately trying to capture your squirmy little kiddo! I still wonder what those two were looking at. Are you taking/planning on …

Melissa and Doug Magnetic Dress-Up Dolls

To get us in the mood for the holidays, over the next couple weeks, our Project Nursery experts and contributors will be sharing favorite holiday gifts that either they received as a child or their children received. Join in on the conversation. What was your favorite gift?   Julie: As a little girl, my favorite Hanukkah gift was the newest “cut-out-and-dress-up” paper doll book that my parents would get for me every year (normally night five of Hanukkah). When I was eight years old, they found me adding glitter and paint to the dresses of one doll and trimming the hem on another, so they began to realize a creative profession was looming in my future. This “Fancy Nancy” book reminds me of the books I loved as a little girl. I love Rosie Flo's Fashion Show, which allows you to color and stage your own paper fashion show. Melissa and Doug take “dress-up” dolls to a new dimension with their magnetic wooden dress-up dolls. Alessia: Of all my childhood Christmases, the ones I remember with great pleasure are those when I have received yet another figurine for my Smurfs collection. I was obsessed with the Smurfs, and I “had to have” the complete village! Since my parents wisely never gave it to me all at once, I always had room to wish for more. This kept me well engaged in writing strategic letters to Santa for several years. If your children have a passion for something, add a little piece each year, and they will …
