Behind the Scenes with Tracy Davis

Designer Tracy Davis, of Urban Dwellings, recently uploaded this gorgeous room for a lucky little girl into our gallery. We fell hard for this room (especially those poms!), and we asked Tracy if she wouldn’t mind answering a few questions about her design.

Tracy, what a lovely room! Can you tell us some of the main goals you hoped to achieve with this room?

Thank you! The main goal in the design of this space was to create a warm and fun room that would transition with the age of the child. Materials and finishes were selected to reflect that goal—nothing too immature or overly thematic.

Would you mind telling us a little about the inspiration behind your window treatments?

I absolutely love large scale prints. We found this lime green and white paisley from Serena and Lily and used it in the drapery as an accent to gently tie into the bedding for a splash of color and fun. I truly love trimmings, using them to embellish our soft goods designs adds a sense of whimsy and delicacy.

We love the way you mix and matched fabrics. How do you find the right balance when choosing fabrics?

For me it’s about emotional and visual balance. Combining fabrics in proportion and scale is how I achieve that stability.

We’re all about the small details here at Project Nursery and adore those poms! Do you have any suggestions for our readers on how to add great knock-your-socks-off details to their children’s rooms?

My advice is to ignore the “rules.” Add points of interest in both small and large scale. Invest in details that are personal and move through them with reckless abandon! Have fun and don’t be afraid to do something that is just a little bit different. Your child’s room can be a reflection of your inner child!

Tracy also designed a fantastic play area space that adjoins this bedroom. Check out more details and photos in the gallery!

This room is just too gorgeous! Is this an attic room? I love the sloped ceilings because it allows you to get really creative. Ah, I just can’t get over how pretty it is.

Beautiful room! And oh, there’s a cute little puppet theater, too. It reminds me of princesses’ playroom and how they have their own puppet theaters! I hope they put it to good use and do puppet shows often.

That is the coolest nook. You can never go wrong with pink and green. It’s soothing and fun.
