In the Big Kids Room with Olive + Tate

We’re revisiting a friend today! Stephanie, of Olive + Tate, shared her daughter’s nursery with us last summer, and now that baby girl Georgia has settled into the family, it’s time to show off big bro Gray’s room! You are going to love the layers in this big boy space—plenty of room to grow yet still ready for a little boy to bust out some toys on the rug. I love the vintage flair that is made modern by incorporating current trends like buffalo check and rattan that fit nicely into both worlds. Thank you, Stephanie, for sharing with us again! We’ll let you take it from here.

I’m Stephanie, a Starbucks-fueled wife and mom who adores a glass of cheap red wine at the end of the day. I accidentally began renovating houses when we bought the ugliest house on the block, and now we’re living a life of demolition, design and decor.

What inspired your room design?
My tiny client had quite a few requests when it came to the design of his big boy room. He wanted letters, numbers, colors (specifically red, blue, white, green and a last minute wild card selection of pink), shapes and color on the ceiling. I wanted to utilize all of his existing nursery furniture to ensure that the budget stayed reasonable while also giving the space a new feel. We used the rug, vintage dresser, leather club chair and acrylic bookshelves that have lived in his nursery and added in a big boy headboard to a mattress and boxspring we had been saving for him. By keeping major purchases to a minimum, I was able to play with accessories and details, which I love.

What was your favorite part of the process? And what do you love the most about the finished design?
My favorite part of the entire design process was the moment my son saw his framed schoolhouse print for the first time and said, “Oh, it is so BEAUTIFUL!” He clearly loves letters and numbers!

On the design side, I am most proud of how I worked in all of his requests in a clean, sophisticated way. The nautical flag represents our last name and manages to incorporate shapes and a handful of his requested colors. I also always love the moment a light fixture is hung in a room because it makes such a visual impact—the woven chandelier is one of my faves and I love the natural element it ties in.

Any challenges you had to work around?
I designed this room as we were moving into a new house. I actually flew down to our new home to get the big boy room (and our daughter’s nursery) set up before we officially moved our babes in, so I had just ten hours from the moving truck unload to get everything unpacked and set up before I hopped a flight back home.

Do you have any words of advice for other designers and parents?
Buy furniture and major investment pieces like rugs that grow with your child! Our plan is to adjust accessories as he grows and matures, but we’ll hang onto his furniture as long as it’s standing!

I love this room! Could you tell me where the green/white throw pillow on the bed is from? Thank you :)
