Not so long ago, we visited Emily Jackson’s home to check out tiny little baby Cannon’s nursery. We can’t even believe that he’s three years old now and that it’s already time for a design upgrade for this little fellow. The blue and gray color palette remained, but everything else got a brand new look, which you can check out below. You may know Emily already from her popular lifestyle blog, Ivory Lane, where she records her experience as a mom of her two little ones and she shares inspiration with her readers. Design inspiration can come from anywhere—what inspired your nursery/kid room design?
Now that Cannon is three, we’ve been thinking about transitioning him into a “big boy bed” and giving his room a makeover so it better fits him, his needs and his style! RH has recently launched RH Interior Design, and I am thrilled to have worked with one of their designers on Cannon’s room. They have the cutest things for both boys and girls! I wanted the overall feel to be a gray and navy color scheme with a modern vibe and a slight nautical twist!
How did your personal style influence your design choices?
I feel like I have a distinct sense of style, and while I wanted the room to be for Cannon and fit his personality and needs, I had an influence on the choices. I knew I wanted all of the furniture to be durable and last a long time, but also be kid-friendly. I wanted it to be a place where Cannon loved to be. Every room in my home is important to me, and this bedroom has become more than just a room. I love the feeling I get whenever I walk in it, and I especially love seeing Cannon doing his own thing in his element!
Now that the room is complete, what was your favorite part of the process? And what do you love the most about the finished design?
My favorite part of the process was being able to meet with the RH Interior Design team at my local City Creek! I was going back and forth between some finishes and design touches, but I could not believe what a difference it made to have all of the colors, fabrics, finishes and so many other details for me to see in person! I’m still amazed at how the entire room came to life after!
I love everything about Cannon’s new room, but one of my favorite parts is the bed and bedding. He’s growing up so fast, but he looks so tiny in this new bed, so I kind of love it! Haha. I also love his Avalon dresser and nightstand (both from RH TEEN actually). I feel like it fits right along with my personal style and the overall home decor of my home. Every piece of furniture and accessory complements each other, and the room just flows.
What is that one thing that everyone mentions when they step into this space?
Whenever anyone steps into Cannon’s room they say how perfect this room is for him, which makes me very happy! Like I mentioned before, as much as I love designing and decorating and adding my own style to everything, I knew I wanted this space to be Cannon’s, which meant that every detail needed to be perfectly suitable for him. I couldn’t be happier with the finished product, and just ask Cannon—he will tell you how much he loves it, too!
What is the one thing that you would tell other parents to consider when they’re starting their own children’s room design projects?
Before you start making rash decisions regarding the design, the colors and the furniture of the room, think of your child. Remember that this is THEIR space and it should represent THEM and a place where THEY enjoy being and feel comfortable. I know Cannon is only three years old, but he helped me design this room and was there every step of the way! I didn’t want to do it without him; I wanted to involve him. And I’m so glad I did!
