Starting with the Furniture: 5 Nursery Design Tips

When designing a nursery, a lot of parents want to select the furniture first. While it’s not the only way to jumpstart your design, it certainly makes a lot of sense. The nursery furniture can help set the style and tone for the nursery, especially when you aren’t sure where to start. We’re sharing some tips on designing your nursery with furniture selection at the forefront.

Find Your Style. If you aren’t sure what style you like, you can start by looking at a furniture company that has a wide variety, like Romina Furniture, and seeing which crib you gravitate to. Do you like the sleek lines of the New York Crib? Or do you prefer something more ornate like the Cleopatra Crib? Browsing through the collections will give you a better idea of what you like and can be a great jumping off point for the rest of your nursery. Once you understand your style, hit up our gallery for more inspiration.

Quality Over Quantity. While at first it may seem like opting for cheaper items is better for your budget, it’s often the opposite in the long run. Consider how a long-lasting piece, like a convertible crib from Romina, can be used through a kiddo’s entire childhood—it converts to a toddler bed and then to a daybed. And don’t forget, you may also want to use other items, like your diaper pail and glider, for more kids in the future, so it’s worth going for quality first rather than having to repeat buy.

Less is More. There are so many cute decor items for nurseries that it can be tough to know the limits, but it can all become clutter fast. You’ll find that your big ticket items, like the crib, glider and dresser, can really shine and only need select decor items to complement them. Believe me, you’ll thank yourself later when you are cleaning the nursery that you kept things simple.

Think About Safety. We all know about outlet covers and baby gates, but you also want to make sure that the items you select for your nursery were made to be safe for baby. Not only do you want well-made items that can withstand the curious hands of a young child, you also want them to meet the highest safety levels for the materials and processes used to make them. You always want to maintain a healthy environment for your baby. Look for furniture that is Greenguard certified, like Romina’s, which means it meets an even higher level of safety certification.

Find What Works for You. The most important part of a nursery is that it functions as an easy-to-use space, so that you and baby can get to the important business of playing and bonding. Don’t be afraid to make changes as you use the space to make it work for you.
