I love the combination of red and pale blue. I love it even more when you get fabulous results such as this for just under $1000. Mom Meghann, did a super job researching superstar Etsy shop owners to pull together a contemporary room with vintage appeal.
Child’s name: Rett
Age: 3 months
Location: Boston, MA
What was your inspiration for the room?
We didn’t know the gender of our baby (so the nursery was designed to work for either a boy or girl) but we knew that we wanted a room that was both soothing and stimulating.
What best describes your decorating style?
We love to mix old and new so the nursery has elements of both including an antique New Mexican prayer bench and vintage decorative elements coupled with modern bookshelves, lighting, and rug.
Please share with us your choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc.
We were also on a tight budget so we needed to do the room for less than $1000.00 including wall paint, lighting, etc. Given those parameters — and knowing that we wanted something with elements that would calm and stir learning and interest — we chose a clean, crisp palette to make it feel cohesive.
We chose to have all the furniture be a crisp, glossy white. This allowed us to marry pieces from a variety of discount sources.
We found the dresser for $150 at Salvage Chic Antiques and the crib we found online on sale for about $300 from Albee Baby. The chandelier ($10), chair ($50), bookshelves ($50), floor lamp ($50) and mirror ($10) were all found on Craig’s List and painted (or spray-painted) the same glossy white.
The gray blue walls (Sherwin Williams – “Sleepy Blue”) and striped rug (found on clearance at Target.com for $50) are very soothing while the red accents — all found on etsy.com — including the bedding ($170.00 from seller “babydarling“), pinwheel mobile ($49.00 from seller “mamax2“), and sandpiper & “r” decals ($54.00 total from seller “elephannie“) are all stimulating things our little guy loves to look at.
What is your favorite item(s) in the room?
I think the sandpiper decals have to be our favorites. We took photographs of the little guys while on a trip and had the etsy.com artist turn them into decals. That said, I think my son’s favorites would have to be the pinwheel mobile (which was custom-made to match the bedding) and the red polka-dots on the bedding. He starts everyday by “talking” to them…
Is there anything else you would like PN readers to know?
Nurseries are always a work in progress. We still have artwork (from etsy.com of course) that needs to be framed and put up; half the fun is changing the space as your baby grows.

Just another great example of how everyone should be shopping for that one of a kind item at Etsy!
Terrific job!

Love it, Love it, love it! This is what a nursery is supposed to look like…it’s unique, not at all cookie-cutter. Your baby is one lucky little guy! Could you tell me where you got the chandelier; would love to know your bargain secrets!!

Hi there-
We found the chandelier on craigslist.org for $8. It was blck when we purchased it; we used some glossy white spray-paint to brighten it up.

Where did you get the rug? I didn’t see that listed within the post and it would be PERFECT for our upcoming nursery!

Hi Annie-
The rug is from Dwell Studio for Target; we found it on clearance at target.com for $50 and they’ve since sold out. A bunch of people have asked me about this rug and I was able to track down some similar options (though they are all more expensive):

The rug was a lucky find; it was part of the Dwell Studio line for Target and we found it online for $50 in their clearance section but, unfortunately, the last time I checked they were out of stock.
That said, a bunch of people have asked me about the rug and i was able to track down this one:

Target does have this one still in stock:

Adorable. If I have a boy I’m definitely going to copy some elements of this room.
I thought Rett’s mommy might like to know that I featured her pinwheel mobile in a recent roundup of DIY mobile ideas at my web site.
