One of the biggest nursery design trends that I’ve noticed for 2019 is the black and white color palette. This high-contrast scheme has shown up a lot, largely due to the popularity of Scandinavian decor (another super fun nursery trend). First, people warmed up to the light wood tones and quirky patterns that Scandinavian companies had to offer, and now black and white is growing too!
This E-Design below is one I recently completed for a client who wanted exactly that—a black and white nursery with Scandinavian touches. She also requested some animal decor, removable wallpaper, and some subtle hints of gold and acrylic.
Wallpaper | Crib | Dresser | Glider | Ottoman | Side Table | Bookcase | Rug | Hamper | Mobile | Lamp | Acrylic Shelves | Round Wall Name | Animal Artwork
My client also really wanted a wallpaper accent wall, so I started this design by looking for just the right pattern. Since black and white can easily get pretty dark, I chose a pattern that had a lot of white in it so we could go darker with the crib. The crib is black, but it has acrylic sides so it doesn’t feel so visually heavy (we balanced the acrylic with the acrylic wall book ledges on the opposite wall).
My client also fell in love with the adorable animal art prints and knew she wanted to include them in the design. What’s great about them is that they appear to be black/white/gray, but they are full color shots, so there is actually a lot of color variation that helps warm up the space (like the touch of pink inside the bunny ears).
We balanced the high contrast design with gray walls and some other gray accents, as well as colorful toys and books and a little plant life. Without these elements, the room could look a bit sparse and cold. I always suggest adding in just a hint of warmth in a mainly black and white space.
