DIY: “Do More With Less” Roller Shade + Giveaway

Get ready for a big, big giveaway! However before I get to the goods, I want to share with you an easy DIY in this multi-tasking, high paced, crazy techy world. Sometimes simple is just plain better and it’s always great to find ways to “do more with less”. In this case, I am referring to the newly re-purposed roller shades in my son’s nursery. It’s amazing what only two yards of fabric, ordinary packing tape and an dirty old roller shade can accomplish.

Supplies

Fabric (2 yards should suffice most standard shades)

Packing Tape

Safety Pins

Roller Shade

Hemming Tape  & Iron (optional)

Directions

1. Extend your rollar shade and lay your fabric on top. Should your fabric extend beyond the width of your shade, simply use hemming tape to fold and iron the edges. The edge of the fabric should be aligned with the sides of shade, no more or no less.

2. Carefully tape the top of your fabric to the top of the bar on the shade. Ensure a smooth fit and layer the tape for a secure hold.

3. Cut the fabric 1-inch below the length of the roller shade.

4. Remove the existing bar from the bottom of the shade.

5. Hang the roller shade above the window so the fabric falls naturally.

6. Fold the fabric over the bottom of the shade material and secure fabric to shade evenly with safety pins across the shade.

7. Re-attach the shade bar by sliding it over the safety pin.

Easy enough, right? Well, we want to prove our point on how you can “do more with less” with the help of the new Windows 7 phone. While it won’t re-furbish your old roller shade, it will definitely simplify your busy life allowing you to use the time you typically spend waiting for your blackberry to load more wisely. We are so convinced that you’ll be impressed, we’re offering one lucky PN reader a Windows 7 phone of your own.

WIN IT! Microsoft is giving away their new, amazing Windows Phone 7 to one lucky Project Nursery reader – a $499 value! Discover Windows Phone 7 and tell us how you can do more with less or tell us why you really, really want this phone to enter. A tip for doing more with less for the holidays:

Don’t forget to spend a little something for those who can’t spend – whether it is adopting a family for a holiday or buying something small for a toy drive. When I was little, I was the recipient of a secret toys-for-tots gift (I had no idea where it came from, it was left at my doorstep), and it helped me continue believing in Santa although my family was not able to afford gifts that year!

I WOULD LOVE A NEW PHONE :) I do not have roller shades, but I take a fairly inexpensive poster frame either (<10 dollars) and print 50 free pictures at Shutterfly and I make collages mixing black and white photos of my family and color ones of new additions to the family. It brightens up any room

One of my favorite more with less tips: When my son gets a stain on the front of a nice tee, I cut a monster or other creature out of fleece or an old tee. I’ll sew it over the stain and my son has another cute shirt to wear. It really does look cute. My favorite was a shark I made out of an old gray tee. I stitched on the words, “I Bite”.

love to have a new phone mine has seen better days. in this economy you have to do more with less anywhere and time you can such as always buy on sale. When you are on a limited budget, you have to be frugal. One of the tactics large families utilize is consistently buying on sale. Impulse purchases can hurt in more way than one. Plan purchases in advance, and wait for sales. With patience, you can maximize your buying power.

The secret to do more with less is all about recycling and up-cycling. There are so many things around the house that would avoid next years garage sale or freshen up your style if you reuse them. There are countless example that make home improvement a lot cheaper and reduce collecting or throwing out so much stuff. Keep an eye out. After you see a neat idea, take a walk around the house and in the garage… there are resources everywhere for the creative.

I have to take out the battery and put the sim card back in place about 3 times a day – I’ve tried every way that I can think of to fix it, but nothing seem to help. So annoying! I’m a big fan of solving problems with simple solutions, I just wish it would work for my current phone.

Since it is the holiday season, I was able to get one of those smaller gorgeous Christmas trees (you know like the ones that they decorate in dept. stores and are so lovely and full, but you can’t actually buy them?) last year for free, only problem was that it didn’t have a stand at the bottom, but only had a very short wired stem at the bottom that wouldn’t support its weight. Couldn’t find a stand that would work for it! I was bound and determined to find anything at all that could make it usable, so I picked a basket that I had around the house and filled it with some broken plate pieces that I had laying around from my mosaic making days and then stuck the tree in, added glue to the stem and covered and glued the top of the basket with holiday fabric, making it fully usable and sturdy. It may sound pretty lame, but I think it is gorgeous and will be sitting on top of a table that I have in the corner of the dining room this holiday season. Just something that I was able to do with a tree that a store was going to throw away and my own goodies that I had around the house!

Thanks so much for the chance!

I could do more with less on this phone because you have apps that can save you time and money, music, a phone – all in one! Love love this idea.
I’d also really like to win it because I think it’s an awesome phone and love to be up to date on the newest phones. As a mom juggling kids, work, and school, I could really use something to keep me more organized.
Thanks for such a fabulous giveaway!

This may not be exactly what you had in mind but I have found I can do so much more for my health by eating less! I can eat smaller portions (healthier food of course) and be able to be healthier and ultimately, weigh less. There is nothing more rewarding you can do for yourself and your health than weighing less!!!

I realized I don’t need things I thought I did and then I thrift shop…it is amazing the bargains I find. Others feels the same as I so I have found everything. I use coupons, only shop sales and have become a huge DIYer.

Our budget doesn’t allow us to go out to eat as often as we used to, do now my daughter and I have “gourmet” night- we pick out a fancy recipe, make it together, and have a special evening. It’s usually a lot better than restaurant food! There is also the added bonus that it’s really fun to try new recipes and techniques.

Doing more with less can have a fantastic outcome when you’re talking about crafting. I knit, so I have *tons* of leftover scraps from various projects. Michael’s has a donation basket for Warm Up America squares, either knit or crochet, so every year I knit a bunch up. Then there is a ‘joining party’, where the accumulated squares are put together into blankets. I have made many new friends piecing together blankets.

I do more with less buy spending a good part of my Sunday going through all the local ad papers, writing a list of which store has the best deals on each item, going online to see if I can find coupons for those items, or if I already have them in my coupon organizer. I then map out my route from store to store to see how I can save the most time and gas and then head out. It takes some time and planning, but I usually save quite a bit. I need the phone because no matter how much more I do with less, it does not leave any extra money for mommy to upgrade her old decrepit phone. We were going to buy a new front door as both of us disliked the one we had, but in the meantime, I decided to paint it, just so that it would look a little bit better. So I painted it a beautiful brick red, which my SO loved so much that he decided to put brass hardware and a brass kick plate on it. That looked so great that he actually took down the old green shutters and put up black ones like I had always wanted, and then painted the mailbox. For under $200 we re-did the whole look of the front of our house.

You can always do Less is More with small children. They aren’t worldly yet. You don’t need to throw huge birthday parties for a two-year old. My kids know that on their birthday it is a small family affair and it’s more about individual attention and praise than “things/gifts”. Start when they’re young.

We do more with less by shopping yard sales and consignment stores. Another great idea is Freecycle. I scored enough yarn to knit an afghan just because someone no longer wanted it.

I would love to win this phone because I currently own two Zunes and would like another one. I also currently own a Windows cell phone, an old one, and it is starting to show wear — cracked screen!

One of our toughest moments was combining two households.
But fortunately everyone gets along really well. We took our large porch and turned it into another bedroom, bought bunkbeds and extra dressers as well as a lot of organizational products from Ikea so that everyone still has their own individual space.

I do more with less because I am great at making money out of nothing! I find old items at garage sales and sell them on ebay for a profit…I do searches online to earn amazon gift cards…and I use online coupon codes to get free shipping and even save a percentage of the final cost!

    November 29, 2010

Ok, so I want this phone because…my current phone is really a joke. Old and zero helpful features. I work a full time job that requires me to be available on my personal cell phone 24/7 — bad consequences if they can’t reach me, most of the time when they call I need to get web email access asap…which has involved borrowing a friends computer, stopping by the library, carrying a laptop and an aircard everywhere I go, etc. When you’re a single mom juggling three kids out for the day…it’s really no fun to try to juggle your phone while holding the silly old battery in place so it doesn’t fall out and then telling them…pack up! I need to get to a computer!

So, I’d like the phone to make my life a little easier, and make the off-hours work a little (ok, a LOT) easier. :)

We live on one income which means using coupons, buying store brands and buying clothes at consighment stores. It’s worth living frugaly so I can stay home with our children. We rarely eat out unless we have a BOGO coupon.

Wow! This giveaway came at the perfect time…would be overjoyed to win. Have had a very basic Virgin Mobile pay as you go phone and it was cheap and now the battery is dead. I really need a GOOD phone! Have to have one for emergencies when travelling to visit my daughter & granddaughters out of state…need to call AAA in case of an emergency.

I do more with less by making homemade pizza every Friday night instead of getting take-out. Sure, it would be a lot easier to get delivery pizza, but I save a lot of money making it from scratch and it tastes great, too! My family feels the love which is an added bonus.

I do more with less everyday…I currently use a pay as you go phone strictly “in case of emergency”…it does not surf the net, it does not take pictures, in fact it does barely anything…so no Facebook or twitter from the mobile, certainly no PN –I KNOW THAT I LIVE IN THE DARK AGES!! I just cannot spend money on myself for a luxury that most others consider a necessity. This is why I would love a new phone that could do everything and FAST!
