If there’s one thing I love to do when I’m designing a party, it is to combine super girly and classic elements with fun, modern twists. Unicorns are trending big right now, and I’ve just been waiting for the chance to get to design some of these magical little fillies for myself! So I was beyond excited when my daughter Annabelle announced that she wanted a magical unicorn birthday party this year! Oh, and did I mention that we share a birthday? So in a way, I kinda feel like I got my own unicorn party!
I wanted the party to be whimsical and pretty but with some fun punches of color, so I went with a white and pastel color palette and then included a few bold neons for a modern twist. Keeping with a touch of modern, I included the traditional unicorn fare, like rainbows, hearts and clouds, but then I also added modern, geometric shapes. I just love how the contrasting elements mix together.
I designed the food tags to be mini versions of the invitations and matching backdrop. I had way too much fun designing it all.
Of course I loaded up on sweets, creating a rainbow ruffle cake, unicorn sugar cookies, cupcakes with coordinating candies and marshmallow rainbows and hearts. And hello, how sweet is this little plush unicorn from The Land of Nod? This cutie had to make an appearance on our dessert table.
Shooting stars, cute clouds and rainbow-horned unicorn printable cupcake toppers completed our pastel rainbow sprinkled cupcakes.
Ballon arches are a huge party trend happening right now, and I was giddy when I stumbled upon this gorgeousness from One Stylish Party! I knew I had to have the DIY Unicorn Ballon Garland Kit and the Jumbo Confetti Balloon or I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
What unicorn birthday party would be complete without unicorn horn party hats? I created these printable “horns” for each little guest to match our unicorn illustration and embellished each one with some tissue paper fringe. The girls loved them, and they looked adorable wearing them!
More balloons and tissue paper tassels decorated the gift table, and the Pin the Horn on the Unicorn game I designed doubled as party decor.
I found the perfect coordinating plates, napkins, gift bags and party horns by Meri Meri at my local TJ Maxx. I am convinced they designed these just for our party—they matched so well! Each little guest was sent home with her own unicorn lollipop that was affixed to a printable favor card—it was our way of thanking them for making Annabelle’s birthday magical!
I’m not sure who loved the party more, Annabelle or me, but a fun time was had by all…and I may or may not have reconstructed our busted up unicorn piñata and have her sitting in my studio. That’s not weird, right?
