Description
After having 3 boys, when I found out we were getting blessed with a little girl the first thing I thought about was her room! I have always loved design since I was little girl. The only issue is that I had some stipulations such as a very very small budget and living in military housing I could not paint!
Design Inspiration
I used to always say I would never do my daughters room all pink and frilly! However I love distressed wood but I did not have the money for it! I decided vintage would be my goal and I would use whatever furniture I could and make into what I pictured in my head.
Decorating Style
Vintage is the best style I can think of, particle board bright white furniture now looks like old distressed real wood!
Project Details
I basically decided to take my younger sisters furniture that she was not using incdluing her dresser and instead of buying expensive changing tables I converted the dresser into one simply by placing a changing pad on top. I started each piece of furniture by painting 2 coats of a dark brown base color, then I rubbed wax from a candle over the knobs, corners and any areas that would get worn and applied my top color to it. Once is was dry I rubbed a steel wool pad over the wax and there ya go! I applied my stencils and then I also rubbed some oil based stain over the top to give that extra antique look. The book shelf I just saw and pictured right away how it would look. I got some cheap fabric and glued it to the back giving it a textured look to really make it pop. The rocking chair was old and beat up and I scored it off of craiglist for 30 dollars. I wanted something old and easy to sand and make new again. I am also not a seamstress so I simply bought a chair cushion and applied the same fabric from the bookshelf to the cushion with iron on no sew patches. Got the pillows for free and just threw them on there!
Favorite Items
I would have to save I am in love with the book shelf and side table. I love stenciling the top of furniture to make it stand out and give it some extra personality.
Advice
My advice is don't break the bank to get what you want! Not only will you create something priceless and one of a kind, but you will be so proud you accomplished it! Take something old and make it new again! Spend that money on vacation :).
