Navy Kansas City Nursery

We originally were using the "Oh The Places You Will Go" theme, but we kept finding local Kansas City maps and materials we wanted to incorporate into the room (including the map mural of Kansas City), and we thought - "Our kid really isn't going far in life!" SO, someone suggested we change it to "The Places You'll Go, but Remember Your Roots" and that sounded good to me. It's a mix of Kansas City and travel materials.

This is our second child, and after designing our first nursery, I started to fall in love with the Navy/White color scheme. I knew I wanted to use it for this project. A lot of the items in the room are DIY, but inspired by items I found on the web. I liked the idea of putting my blood, sweat and tears into every element in the room, and really tried to make as many of the items as I could.

The dresser was a 6-week project that my dad and I tackled to complete strip and stain. It was a hideous bright blue before. The crib is from a Project Nursery contest that I won (THANK YOU NEWPORT COTTAGES!), and I was amazed how close we were able to get the dresser to match the color of the crib.

The Peter Pan painting was a DIY project, but inspired by an Etsy artist (link to Etsy: The map painting above the crib was a DIY project (letters purchased from Etsy). Same with the nautical maps - those are hand cut on scrapbooking paper, but they were inspired by an Etsy artist (link to artist page: The paper airplane mobile is a DIY project inspired by an item at Pottery Barn Kids.

I hope you enjoy it! Thank you to the wonderful Briana Gray with The Grays Photography (
