A lot of parents try and go for a theme in their nursery and my husband was no different – he wanted the muppets. Well after a lot of discussion I convinced him to trust me on my design and he is very glad that he did. I didn’t want a themed room or a “baby” room. I love designing rooms that will easily transition from birth to teens and the character of the room can easily be updated with ever changing interests. There is only one window in the room so I went with a soft creamy white and to add some drama a navy blue striped wall – I love that the stripes all vary in size – and then we added one green stripe that extends all the way around the room.

I love all things vintage and refurbishing furniture. The dresser was perfect because it belonged to my uncles 70 years ago and then my brother and now my son. It’s from Ethan Allen and in great shape. I stripped the stain off of it and re-stained it navy blue and added vintage looking water faucet knobs from Hobby Lobby. The rocking chair is also a refurbished piece that a friend did for me. I continued with the blue and green theme with the curtains and fabric on the rocking chair. Feeling like a needed a little pop of color, we added the vintage lantern lamp in red, an old red trunk and a abacus for a touch of yellow. All vintage pieces that fit so well with the room. The shelves were a DIY project that my husband installed based off of some inspiration photos I found on Pinterest. I love how they add a slight rustic/industrial feel. My Husband got his Muppets with some contemporary prints that my sister created for us (she’s a very talented graphic designer and amazing photographer)! The art above the crib was another DIY project. We found an old map of the world, I bought some wooden letters from Michaels, painted them red, glued them onto the map and my Husband built a frame for it. We do a lot of reading with our son so the shelves are littered with books. The toy boxes and the whale rocker are my designs that my husband makes come to life (I’m so lucky!). And the changing table was an amazing space saver and an easy project. My husband again built the base and then installed drawer hinges from Lowes and it will hold up to 100 lbs. It has been great! Really, the only thing that was new was the crib. Everything else was refurbished or custom designed and built by my husband and I.
