Hip Hop Hooray for an Easter Picnic!

Easter is hopping up on us, and we couldn’t be happier! Everything about this time of year makes us smile—from the soft pastel colors to sweet bunnies and chicks, everything is bursting with new life and plenty of reasons to get outside and celebrate. We’re excited to share some bright ideas on how to make this spring holiday extra special with your kids by planning an Easter picnic.

The weather is warming up and that means it’s picnic time. Hooray for taking the mess outside! Our little hometown turns into an almond blossom wonderland this time of year, so we were lucky enough to sneak out into an orchard for our picnic, but any park or backyard will work just fine!

If you haven’t decorated with paper bunting, you’re in for a real treat! We selected garlands in light pink, mint and yellow for this spring celebration. We hung them outside by taping the ends to tree limbs, but you can easily pin them against a wall or hang from the ceiling. It literally takes five minutes and makes a huge statement. We also floated a giant aqua helium balloon. Decorations aren’t necessary for an outside picnic, but they do really make things feel extra special!

It’s not a picnic without a picnic blanket! Make sure to grab one that’s extra large so everyone has room to spread out. We had fun putting together a tray with all sorts of yummy snacks, like bunny crackers, flower-shaped marshmallows, fruit, jellybeans, popcorn and everybody’s favorite Cadbury mini eggs. Our kids loved snacking away and sipping on pink lemonade.

After the picnic, have the kids play a fun Easter-related game or two. Here are a couple of ideas that both younger and older kids will enjoy.

Bunny Hop Sack Race. Give each child some bunny ears and an old pillowcase or burlap sack to hop in.

Egg Roll Race. Give each child a hard-boiled egg. The object is to get it from the starting line to the finish line. There are several ways to roll the egg. The White House version allows the kids to push them with spoons. They could also push their eggs with their feet or even their noses! The first egg to reach the finish line wins!

Egg Hunt. Of course, one of the best things about Easter is the egg hunt! We always like to hide a combination of hard-boiled eggs and plastic eggs filled with treats. Another fun option if you’re not ready for the actual egg hunt is to have an egg coloring party. There are so many cute egg decorating kits available that will keep the kids entertained and allow them to express their artistic skills!
