I love to create artwork for our home with photos of the family that has a bit more personality than an average picture frame. This project is so simple and requires only a few supplies. Make your very own modern photo wall art using a black and white copy of your favorite picture of your baby and the paint color of your choice. This would be the perfect project to create for a first birthday or any milestone—just imagine how sweet it would be to display a new one every year.
Materials: 6″ x 6″ wood art panel
Cover the front of the wood panel with two coats of paint using your sponge brush. While the paint is drying, print a black and white copy of a favorite photo of your little one. I sized my picture to 3.5″ x 3.5″ so it would fit nicely off center on the wood panel. Cut out the image.
Once the paint is completely dry, use your paint brush to apply a layer of Mod Podge to the back of the picture. Adhere to the wood panel, and smooth out any bubbles with your fingers. Once dry, apply a coat of Mod Podge to the whole wood panel with a sponge brush. Let it completely dry, and you have yourself a handmade art piece!

Was the photo on regular printer paper or a gloss photo from like a Walgreens print shop? Also, the last mod podge coat, do you put it over the picture to or just the wood? Thanks! As I am doing this project today :) just bought everything!

Hi Elizabeth, Yes, the last coat of mod podge goes on top of everything. I don’t think it’s a gloss photo. I think you can get away with printer paper or matte photo printer paper. The thicker the paper the less seamless it’s going to appear.

Thanks Beth for the quick response! Can I get away with a standard photo print from Walgreens for example? Bc that is what I have. Do you think that standard photo print quality will work VS printing on a home printer with the paper you recommended? Thanks again!

Hi Elizabeth, I haven’t tried it myself, so I’m not certain. Maybe try using a spare photo and mod podge it to a piece of paper to see if you like how it looks before working directly on your wood. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hopefully I can help everyone out! I did this project and had the same question about quality of paper. I loved the color blue that was used so I followed the directions on the paint type, and got all supplies listed and didn’t have to go back to the store for anything. I did use a PRINTED photo on regular printer paper, crossed my fingers and went for it- it turned out great!! Looks best after sealed. I would play around with what photo used- some look between than others. Thanks for sharing this idea!
