Design Reveal: Sweet & Sentimental Nursery

Good Morning! Today I am sharing a beautiful nursery with you, courtesy of Andrea of  The TomKat Studio. Before I hired Andrea, I poured over her blog, Baby Steps to Mom, learning about her and her sweet little family. I fell in love with the soft and serene space she created for her baby girl, Linnea.

In Andrea words: When I found out I was having a girl, I suddenly became the Pink Mom. I wanted everything in pink, pink, PINK! With Linnea’s nursery, I wanted to go with a soft, pale pink- nothing too bright for her room. We originally wanted to paint the walls pale pink, but decided at the last minute to leave them the neutral shade that came with the house in case we decided to change things up in the future. My overall vision for the room was Vintage Bird, and I scouted shops like anthropologie, Goodwill, Savers, Ikea, and HomeGoods for fun finds on a budget. The main colors we chose were pink, black, and ivory, with natural wood furniture.
My favorite thing about Linnea’s room is that it is full of handmade items (either by me or a loved one), refurbished goods and keepsakes that were given to us by family. My husband sanded, repainted and antiqued my childhood dresser ivory and surprised me with an adorable bird drawer pull from anthropologie, and we found an ugly night stand at Savers for $8, refinished it black and put a pale pink drawer pull (also from anthro) on it and it looks brand new! He also made the chalkboard from an old calendar frame we found at Goodwill.
Some of the most special things in the nursery are the keepsakes given to me by both of my grandmothers that have been passed on to Linnea. My grandmother who passed away recently, Mum Mum, gave me my dad’s newborn shoes- they are 75 years old and are sitting on the night stand! Other items I have that were hers are the Bluebirds of Happiness, a tray and mirror set, a Hummel music box, and a stuffed puppy she always kept on her bed (we have major dog lovers in our family!). My other grandmother Amma (who is from Iceland) also gave her figurines, and her sister made a beautiful quilt and had it sent from Iceland.

I wanted to contribute lots of homemade things in Linnea’s nursery, so my husband sanded and painted some frames black, and I filled them with lace, fabric, and doilies and hung them above the glider. Linnea ALWAYS stares up at them while I’m feeding her! I also made the flags hanging from her crib, her bird mobile with the lights and the pillow on the glider. Framed photos, a monogram L and a keepsake prayer plaque I have had since I was a baby sits on the shelves above her crib.

The birdhouses were made by my BFF Amber, who made them for my baby shower when she threw it for me a week and a half before Linnea’s early arrival! She and my dear friend Kelly threw a gorgeous, vintage bird-themed shower, complete with bird nest cupcakes made by Kelly’s sister Lindy, homemade food by my mom and Amma, a photo collage of our maternity shoot by Session Nine, and all of my closest friends. It was an absolutely gorgeous affair and I couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful party to celebrate the arrival of our little girl!
