Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself, New Mamas!

Oh man, has it been a tough winter…and it’s only just started! Stomach bugs and colds have been running rampant. I had a winter baby myself, and I know how nerve-wracking it can be trying to protect your baby from germs, but let’s not forget about you new moms too. Let’s face it, after having a baby, you are run down. You aren’t getting a lot of sleep, your body is still healing and you, too, may be more susceptible to those bugs being passed around.

Even at your most vigilant and no matter how many times you wash your hands, you can’t always escape those pesky viruses, which can really knock you off your feet. And if it happens right in the early days with a brand new baby, you really feel like you’ve been hit when you were already down. Remember that metaphor that you have to put your own air mask on before you can help those around you? The same is true here, mamas, as much as you want to put yourself second, you need to make sure you are healthy and well too.

So if you get hit with a cold in your early days with a new baby, it’s especially important to make sure you take care of yourself as soon as possible. Get lots of rest. Never has the advice of sleep when your baby is sleeping been more true. Accept help when it’s offered and ask when it isn’t—I know that can be a tough one! Keep yourself hydrated and eat nutrient rich foods. And, as always, consult with your doctor as needed when you are sick. Sometimes you need a little extra boost, but you aren’t ready to break out the heavy duty cold meds. In that case, you may want to check out Maty’s Healthy Products Organic Cough Syrup.

Their organic, all-natural product is made using non-GMO, whole-food ingredients, including organic honey. I don’t know about you, but I find honey soothing when I have a sore throat. Maty’s Healthy Products wants to make sure you feel good about what you are putting in your body, so they are very upfront with what they use in their products, which allows you to make informed decisions about your own care. You can read more about their whole line and their ingredients here. Remember, if you are breastfeeding, you should run any supplements past your doctors before taking.

And while we are talking winter, Maty’s Healthy Products also offers an all natural baby ointment, which is free of petroleum, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, hydrogenated oils, sulfates, artificial colors, mineral oils, gluten or chemicals. Whew! I know a lot of these things you probably never paid attention to until you had a baby of your own, but it’s nice to know what you are putting on your baby’s skin. Our own Kristin swears by Maty’s Baby Ointment to combat the dryness of winter on her family’s skin.

So this winter, yes, be a germ vigilante for your new baby, but don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Here’s wishing you a healthy season for your whole family!
