In the Nursery with What’s Up Moms?’s Brooke Mahan

If you haven’t checked out What’s Up Moms? you are missing out on some serious giggles. You can catch these hilarious moms on their YouTube channel or their website, where they publish posts and videos aimed to inspire, inform and make you laugh (this video is my favorite, but this is a must-watch if you’re pregnant).

We are so excited today to be able to take you on a tour through the nursery of one of these funny ladies—Brooke Mahan. What makes it even more special is that our very own PN contributors J&J Design Group worked with Brooke to design this colorful and creative nursery for her brand new baby boy. We know you are going to love it. Let’s hear from both Brooke and the designers about the process.

What's Up Moms? Brooke Mahan in Son's Nursery

Brooke, tell us a little about yourself.
I love being a mom and wife and taking care of my boys and our home. I am a little old fashioned in that way. I am also very blessed to have a job that allows me to share my passion for design and creating things with so many people. I always try to make projects on my show that are unique and beautiful but also achievable, so I wanted to create that same effect in the nursery. The handmade touches make it extra special.

Tell us about your design process.
Brooke: I really wanted to work with J&J Design Group. I had been following their designs on Project Nursery since my first pregnancy, so it was literally a dream come true when they agreed to do this project! I had a wallpaper I loved, and they created a design around that.

What was the most important thing you wanted to achieve when creating this space?
J&J Design Group: We wanted a space that was fun and fresh that would grow along with the baby—one that mom and dad would love as well.
Brooke: It was really important to me that the space would be beautiful but also functional. I will be spending a LOT of time in this room!

What is your favorite thing about the room?
J&J: We think our favorite thing about the room is the felt ball letter C. We just love how it pops off of the wallpaper and makes the gallery wall come alive.
Brooke: It’s so hard to choose, but I love the vintage car and the reading nook—that corner of the room just makes me smile.

What’s the first thing people notice when stepping foot into this room?
J&J: We would say it’s the crib with the gallery wall above it. We just love the way those pieces came together.

Did you have any unexpected obstacles when creating this room?
J&J: We hadn’t originally chosen the wallpaper for the crib wall, but it was something that Brooke really loved. We redesigned the room around the wallpaper, and the result is an adorable vintage/modern themed nursery.

Do you feel like the room transitions well with the rest of your home?
Brooke: Absolutely, but with a little more color and fun! Because the nursery is behind a closed door, you really can have fun with the space. That’s what we did while incorporating a mix of modern and traditional like the rest of the house.

Do you have any words of advice for other designers and parents?
J&J: Have fun with your children’s rooms. They are only young once, and now is the time to explore fun colors and styles. Stay away from specific themes if you can, since your child’s tastes are bound to change again and again.

Is there anything you learned when designing this nursery that will help you with your next room update? And if you already have plans for your next project, please tell us a little about it!
Brooke: I am hoping that my next project will be Lincoln’s big boy room, and I would love nothing more than to partner with J&J Design Group and AllModern again. Lincoln has pretty specific tastes though, so we’ll get to see what it’s like working for a three-year-old.

Love Brooke and love the nursery! I am obsessed with your site, especially as I am in “transition period” of having to convert my baby room to toddler and new baby coming. Anyways, love your site!
