New York City is famous for not offering much space, but you'd be surprised by how easily an unused basement can turn into a wonderland. Here the client gave us their basement to convert into a playroom for their three children—and all their friends. The only challenge we faced was the lack of natural light. We changed the space by adding wallpaper, painting the walls and shelves and adding new carpets. In a few cases, we reused shelving they already owned, giving them a new coat of paint and a bright new lease on life. We brought in a variety of seating elements and furniture types to suit whatever mood the children are in on any given day. Our starting point was this unique and colorful robot wallpaper. We chose something whimsical to bring both a sense of fun and vibrant color to the space. We found the perfect play table from a school supply store—its height can be adjusted easily, so it can grow with the children and also be a comfortable place for the parents to sit when they are coloring with their children. The table allows for bins underneath for storage, making it functional on multiple levels. The bright colored chairs we used enlivened the neutral table. Our advice? Keep it simple and most importantly, keep it fun; playrooms are about expressing creativity and letting go. With elements like a chalkboard wall, we created spaces for the children to add the final—and ever-changing—touches to the design of their spaces.

We have a soft spot for Caden Lane here at Project Nursery because our very own Katy Mimari is the owner and designer. Spring is in full swing, and we are thoroughly enjoying the bright color trend that is hot, hot, hot this season. Could it be that our Show us Your CMYK Style contest set this trend in motion? We'd love to think so, and with over 280 entries to our contest, we must tip our hats to all that participated. The judges were blown away by the creativity and pure fun we saw in all the Pinterest and original design boards that were submitted. Now it's time to present the all-new CMYK Zen stroller by bloom and the $1000 giggle gift card to the winner! Without further ado, the winner of the CMYK style giveaway is… Shelly Gajus, you've got the CMYK Style! Judges Ali Wing, of giggle, Simon May, of bloom, and Project Nursery were all impressed with how you covered the CMYK color model—cyan, magenta, yellow and black—with the practical balance of baby/nursery-focused images, as well as other images that embraced the bold and bright CMYK style in your board. Big congrats! While the Pinterest boards were truly amazing, the judges felt we also needed to award an honorable mention to a reader who took extra time with an original design board submission. This accolade goes to Jessica Ross. Your delightful design board was sunny and bright, but most of all, we could envision your room coming to life. Jessica, you will receive a $100 giggle gift card. Although all the entries showed us some serious CMYK style, the …

My son recently had his third birthday party, and he got to pick the theme. He is currently obsessed with dragons, so I had to get to work on creating a three-year-old friendly party without any dragon images that might be a bit scary for some of the little guests. I ended up using an old Peter, Paul and Mary song that my mother used to sing to me as a point of inspiration—Puff the Magic Dragon. Which again goes to show that inspiration can come from anywhere! For this party, I learned a few new tricks and also used some that are tried and true. Thrift stores are Mecca for inexpensive party props. I found a ledge shelf and a candle holder that I painted and repurposed for my dessert display. I created and painted a few cake stands as well from candlesticks and plates from the local Goodwill. The pieces displaying the party favors also came from some thrifty shopping and were perfect after a few cosmetic adjustments. If you don't plan to use the items again and again, don't invest in expensive serving pieces—look for something you can repurpose. I knew bright purple and lime green don't come up in my color selections very often, so paint was the perfect way to achieve my design look! Boxed lunches rock! The three-year-olds found opening the lunch boxes nearly as exciting as opening a present, and the moms and dads there totally appreciated not having to juggle plates and …

What could be sweeter than candy-colored inspiration? It's one of the not-so-ordinary places that you can find fun colors to play with. Everyone loves candy, and it reminds us all that we still are just kids at heart. image from Mom's Crafty Space Sugar-filled pops of color inspire a fun and imaginative nursery palette. My method make-under is off to a promising start, and spring cleaning feels especially right this year. The pretty, toxin-free products look so cheerful lined up under my kitchen sink, and I've actually found myself a wee bit more motivated to clean. Full disclosure—I do have a weekly cleaning woman (she's my hero!), but she's also thankful for the new cleaning loot. Method and Noah, the official spokesinger of method, are at it again with another clean happy video that will have you feeling the love and wanting to "Clean Like a Mother" too! I'll admit my cleaning conscience has been on high alert after becoming a method maven last March. I thought I knew a thing or two about green cleaning, but at the event, I learned WAY more about safe cleaning ingredients for the home and the environment. It dawned on me that I was still using a few products with super nasty toxic chemicals and dare I say...bleach! That's when I silently pledged to give my home cleaning products a make-under. Here's my new product lineup. My kids aren't sure what has gotten into their mother since I've been busy spraying the all-purpose cleaner all over the place. Its plant-based "powergreen" technology safely knocks out all the usual suspects in my kitchen: counter tops, tables, highchair, cabinets and even the wood floor. I love the efficiency of a one-stop shop, and the fact that the bright orange color matches my kitchen makes me smile. With Earth Day …
