We wanted a gender neutral, modern and cost efficient nursery that would easily transform into a toddlers room. I was inspired by the nurseries I found in Domino Magazine (so sad they aren’t publishing anymore) and online sites like Project Nursery.
What best describes your decorating style?
In general, I lean towards transitional styles and neutral colors to coordinate with family antiques I’ve inherited. When it came to the nursery, I wanted to create a totally modern space free of over stylized furniture, patterns and “baby stuff”. The room is only 9’x9′ so a clean and open look made the room feel more spacious and happy.

Any Money saving tips?:
After doing a lot of shopping and online research, I was surprised to find the perfect crib and dresser on Walmart.com! The pieces are constructed to be very sturdy and they meet all safety requirements. I made the window valance and bed skirt out of a gender neutral and retro fabric I found at Ikea for under $20.00 per yard. My husband and I assembled all the furniture and painted the room ourselves but hired an electrician to install the ceiling light and upgrade all outlets.
My favorite item in the nursery is the Robert Abbey ceiling fixture. The timeless design and way it scatters shards of light across the ceiling is so unique. I actually envision my child using it in their own home one day.

It was a challenge to create an affordable modern nursery without any cheesy baby stuff but I think we did a great job.

I adore the light fixture! What a great idea to use a bed skirt as your valence – great job! The Walmart Baby Mod crib is my crib of choice as well.

I think the light fixture is ugly. Wouldn’t be suprised if the baby was terrified of it. I know i wouldn’t want to lay on my back staring at that all day.
