A Modern yet Bohemian Zen Den

Hi Project Nursery!!!!
I wanted to create a space not only for baby but for mom as well! A space that wasn’t overloaded with chaos and themes but a place to relax and bond. The accent wall is a color called ‘chimney’ and it came out to be the perfect hue of calmness. I loved Mixing in the pink chair, because that’s MY chair after all, and it gives the boys room a bit of a feminine touch. It glides and swivels, too! All in all I wanted to be proud of the nursery and I most certainly am! My goal was to be featured on Project Nursery because they showcase all the best styles, themes, and nursery trends! This is my first baby and I can’t wait to welcome him to him new home next month!
Love,
Becca

A Farmhouse Nursery Inspired by The Velveteen Rabbit

When my husband and I decided to start a family, we planted ourselves in West Point, Virginia, a small coastal community with great schools and an abundance of historic charm. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, where kids still ride their bikes up and down Main Street until the street lights come on, and most businesses are still Ma and Pop-owned. We were drawn to our circa 1917 farmhouse style dwelling by its giant wrap around porch, rich unpainted wood details, and the little bits of charm you just can’t find in most new construction (mantles in every room?! a secret passage into the attic?! a “Harry Potter Room” under the stairs?! what’s not to love?). It’s been a long, labor intensive project to be sure, but we’re turning this old house into our forever home one plaster crack at a time.
I’m a designer (floral) by trade, so nesting comes naturally to me. Multiply that instict by 100 once I found out we were expecting! I immediately started thinking about all the design possibilities for baby’s nursery. I wanted it to reflect the same kind of charm my husband and I felt when we fell in love with our town, our home, and how we knew we’d feel when we met our sweet girl. I wanted a sense of continuity with the rest of our home, which has a farmhouse vibe with lots of texture and vintage elements, and I knew the room should grow with our little one, transitioning seamlessly from infant to toddler, from kid to teen. A challenge that constantly presents itself when designing for our home is preserving and highlighting the original hardwoods without allowing them to overwhelm and darken the space. Keeping these practical goals in mind, I selected a light, airy color palette – whites, grays, and tans, with pops of mint and dusty blues – and then settled on a motif, which needed to inject a bit of childlike joy (it is a nursery, after all!). Ultimately, my favorite classic children’s book – The Velveteen Rabbit – became my inspiration and supplied a much-needed touch of whimsy.
I love the contrast of simple white walls against the color of our hardwoods, but I often find white paint can make a space feel a bit void; I created a textured accent wall behind the crib to liven things up a bit. Bearing in mind our budgetary and practical constraints (aka: plaster walls), we opted to use a blown wallpaper that looks and feels just like shiplap. Y’all wouldn’t believe how many people are surprised it isn’t the genuine article.
Another challenge that often presents itself in older homes like ours is storage; none of our bedrooms have closets. Rather than opting for a bulky wardrobe, we chose to install a custom shelving unit. I fully anticipate this addition to turn into a catch-all as baby girl grows, so eventually we’ll install a floor to ceiling curtain to hide what I’m sure will be a small disaster zone. But for now a few decorative bins, boxes, crates, and an adjustable tension rod suit our storage needs quite well.
I walk a fine line between extravagance and frugality. If it’s not something that will stand the test of time (think family heirlooms like the custom made quilt from Little Bits of Everything or the antique wooden horse passed down by my father in law), I’m not willing to splurge. But being a designer and general craft queen, I’m pretty thrifty. Armed with my trusty muscle (ahem…husband) and a can-do attitude, I decided to tackle a few small projects that make a big statement in the nursery. In addition to hand-making all of the wall decor, stenciling the inside of the mantelpiece, and hand-sewing a sweet little bunny garland, my husband and I refurbished an antique dresser to repurpose as a changing table. My hope is that someday my sweet girl will look back at these photographs or pick up some of these items and realize that they were made with love just for her.

Modern Meets Rustic Boy Nursery

Designing and decorating our son’s nursery was by far the most gratifying project since purchasing our home five years ago. Generally, I love to decorate, but creating a personal, safe and loving space for our little one filled me with a new kind of joy. A joy that felt warm and tremendously sweet.
There was never a theme. Only a vision of classic colors, clean lines and touches of rustic textures. I wanted the space to feel soft and organic while also youthful and functional. Each detail should be thoughtfully considered and carefully chosen.
Some of my favorite elements of Brooks’ nursery are the blue striped shiplap wall, wire book hangers and personal pieces incorporated from my and my husband’s childhood nurseries. My most favorite element is one you can’t even see. While installing the shiplap, my husband and I each wrote messages to Brooks on the wall behind. I love knowing those sweet words from his two biggest fans sit quietly above his crib.
My advice to those planning their nurseries –

Find a style that really speaks to you. Search for inspiration in elements that make you feel happy, comforted and nostalgic.
Take your time and enjoy the process! Preparing for baby can be overwhelming. Bringing your nursery vision to life should be fun!
Do your research on designing a functional space. The prettiest nursery won’t serve you well if the diapers are out of reach.
Shop around! We found great deals online and in discount stores. Nurseries don’t have to break the bank.

Boys’ Adventure Bedroom (with secret hideout)

My two boys love to explore, so my goal was to design an “adventure” bedroom that would grow with them. We used navy blue, white, and gray with pops of green and yellow. The design includes a number of DIY projects, including the wood arrows, military alphabet posters, and painted gray dresser. The most fun part was creating their reading nook. We were able to turn the empty dormer window space into a fun secret hideout.

Modern Magnolia Baby Sprinkle

Who’s ready for a Magnolia themed Baby Sprinkle?! This theme came from our client’s love of Magnolia Market + all things Joanna Gaines.  The Soirée team did a modern approach to the theme by popping shades of blue + gold to compliment the natural beauty of greenery.  Accents included wood stands, farm tables, and simple farmhouse decor.  On the modern side, we used the Malibu collection of tableware which glammed our family style guest table.  Such a cute take on a trending theme!

We’re heading into spring and one of our favorite events that kicks off the season is none other than, Coachella. A fun music festival full of wildflowers, bright decor, and who can forget that Ferris wheel! Here we created a baby girl shower which we like to call, Babychella.

Neutral & Rustic Nursery Inspired by Artist Slim Aarons

Hilary and Jeff have a fantastic since of humor and style. Since one of their favorite artists is Slim Aarons, we knew that artwork in the nursery would create an amazing general neutral space that baby would grow with. I helped them pick out the pieces that would look great with the color scheme while keeping it neutral. We brought in personality with natural fabrics, rustic overtones and a fantastic playful arrow rug.
The nursery was designed by Dallas Stylist, Courtney Warren. https://www.courtneywarren.com/
