Adventure Theme Boy Bedroom Makeover

My little man, age 8, would spend all of his time playing outside in our woods if I would let him! So I wanted to bring the outdoors in for his Adventure/Camping themed room makeover. Everything in this makeover is budget-friendly with a lot of DIY touches. I wanted it to be a room he could use for a long time, so while I added in some whimsical elements, all of the main furniture pieces can take him into his teenage years. Light and Airy Floral Nursery

Within days of finding out I was pregnant, I came across the Jolie Mural Wallpaper on Pinterest and fell head over heels in love with the print. Once we found out that we were having a girl, that print became the inspiration behind the nursery’s design. It was the perfect combination of whimsical and feminine. The room that we had decided to turn into the nursery is fairly small, so I needed to keep the design light and airy in hopes of making the space feel larger than it actually is. I knew we would be spending a lot of time in that room once our little girl arrived, so I wanted to have a space that was super comfortable and inviting and have lots of different textures and materials throughout.
I started with the installation of the wall mural and paint color (Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter). I knew I wanted all the nursery furniture to be white, and had identified some key nursery items I wanted to purchase like the bassinet, dresser, and rocker. I held off on buying any decor early in the process because I wasn’t completely sure of the accent colors/materials I wanted to incorporate into the space. Shortly after completing the installation of the mural, I came across the pendant light and side table and really liked the look of the geometric shape of the light and the gold color of the side table. I began to build on those pieces from there.
I designed and built the geometric air-plant crib mobile. I wanted to incorporate some greenery into the nursery, and love how low maintenance air-plants are. I found the geometric shapes at Hobby Lobby and the idea for the mobile took shape. I used transparent fishing line and tied the geometric shapes to a metal ring (spray painted gold). I love how this mobile ties in the pendant light and adds dimension to the nursery.
My husband (who is an electrician) retrofitted the geometric pendant light from a plug-in fixture to a hardwired fixture. We also spray painted the pendant light, the curtain rod, and the shelf brackets gold.
Social media can be a huge help when it comes to finding inspiration for a nursery design. When I am designing a room, I try to find one or two pieces that I love and let those items be my inspiration, and then build upon the design from there. If I try to do the design all at  once I tend to get overwhelmed and apprehensive. I also found it helpful to identify the big items I wanted in the nursery and held off on buying decor until those key items were in the room.
A note of caution to any parent interested in installing a vinyl panel mural like the Jolie Wallpaper – make sure the roofline of the wall you’re working with is level. We found out the hard war that ours was not level, which led to the panels not lining up like they should. Thankfully, Anewall accounts for such a situation and each panel has extra length on both ends so you can adjust accordingly. After attempting to install it first ourselves, we ended up making the decision to hire a professional to complete what we had started – and boy am I glad we did!
The Jolie Wall Mural is probably my favorite ‘thing’ in the nursery! If my husband would let me, I would have that wallpaper in our master bedroom. Not only is the design beyond beautiful, but the mural is vinyl, which means it’s removable and requires no sticky wallpaper paste during installation.

What I love about this nursery more than anything, is the relaxing and inviting feel of the space. I really enjoy spending time in the room, which makes those 3 am feedings a little easier.

Watch Out Wild West Cowboy Room

My husband and I have such a fun time putting our little cowboy’s room together. He made the covered wagon bed with a lot of help from our Gpa. I sewed the canvas and painted the room.
The room is a collection of old and new. Some of it was in my husbands childhood room while others we have picked up along he way. We found the Pendleton blanket and thought it was the finishing piece for the room.
I hope you get and little bit of inspiration and enjoy it!

Kids Thanksgiving Party

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving with lots of kids or just want to celebrate with a fun Kids Thanksgiving Party, this adorable party will have you gobbling for more!
Kids love crafts and this party kicked off with each guest wearing a whimsical apron from Pottery Barn Kids and making a turkey or feather hat for their big Thanksgiving feast! Materials for the craft were neatly displayed in small square crates with personalized Thanksgiving gift stickers from Tiny Prints, which guests later used for leftovers!
Instead of telling the kids about the Thanksgiving why not read a kids book about the first Thanksgiving and have them share what they’re thankful for on craft paper!
Often times the kids table at holiday gatherings is an afterthought. However, this kids table was anything but boring with the whimsical turkey table linen, dinnerware, chair backers, and stuffed turkey from Pottery Barn Kids, personalized Bon Appetite napkins, and centerpiece of seasonal squash, pumpkins, and cotton.
Kids enjoyed feasting on pumpkin chocolate mousse bites, pumpkin chocolate chip blondes, pumpkin pita chips and hummus, pumpkin space caramel corn with roasted pumpkin seeds and walnuts, and mini apple pies!
Every party should have a signature drink, even a kid’s party! Kids enjoyed apple cider from one of the local farms in Charlotte.
Gobble gobble gobble until you wobble!

Outdoor-Inspired Baby Shower

Hello!

Welcomer to our Outdoor-Inspired Baby Shower! This event is full of DIY details! The new Parents are big adventurers and love nature, hiking, and camping so the theme fit perfectly with their family. We were inspired by watercolor woodland creatures, natural colors and elements, such as wood and greenery. The DIY details include the onesies, table garland, gift tent, cake topper, and all the signs. Such a labor of love!
A Sunday afternoon in August called for cold refreshments and light food that included fruit, fresh vegetables, spinach dip and hummus, peach iced tea and strawberry lemonade. We had a few activities that included Outdoor Trivia, How well do you know the Momma Bear?, and an Animal Gestation quiz. We set up a gift tent, trail mix bar for a take-home favor and ended the day with delicious carrot cake and fresh doughnuts.
It was a wonderful afternoon filled with love and excitement for the coming of Baby Lincoln.

McKenzie’s Dinosaur Birthday Party

Our Little McKenzie turned 5 and really wanted a Dinosaur Birthday Party, so of course I do what I do best and go to Pinterest for ideas. Since she’s not really an All Pink Everything kind of little girl, I went with the more realistic Jurassic look for the decor and through in a pop of Pink in the cookies and paper plates.  I then created a backdrop using a thick poster board covered with Moss from Michaels. I used Palm Leaves to frame it and other artificial plants I had sitting around the house. I purchased wooden letters that spelled our “Roar” from Hobby Lobby and hung them using twine to set the stage for the rest of the cake table.
She was amazed when she walked in with her class and could not stop talking about it the rest of the week! It’s moments like these that make me step back for a minute and appreciate how much fun mom’ing can be! Happy Birthday To Our Precious Girl!

Josie’s Blue Bunny First Birthday

Our daughter LOVES a stuffed blue bunny that she picked out at the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor in Le Mars, Iowa. Once we were planning her birthday party, we decided that we should have a theme that she loves, and her blue bunny is her favorite thing!
We created sparkly blue bunnies and floral bunnies out of paper from Hobby Lobby and added fluffy bunny tails. We made these into two different banners. We also made a “Blue Bunny” month-by-month photo banner. Some of my favorite details for decorations were her “carrot” balloons, “carrot” napkins, and “Blue Bunny” cups. We made the cups by gluing cotton balls onto blue cups and I thought they turned out adorable!
We served “carrot” strawberries, bunny bread, carrot cupcakes, veggies, and also had a “Blue Bunny” ice cream bar. We made the “carrot” strawberries by dipping strawberries in melted orange Wilton candy melts. We served them over Oreo “dirt” and in a tray that we glued a small “picket fence” around. The “Blue Bunny” ice cream bar was a hit! We used small terra-cotta planters to hold a variety of toppings. We all enjoyed the ice cream!
It was such a fun party to plan and our little Josie Rose really enjoyed the bunny decorations…especially the balloons!

Boy’s Dream Baseball Room

My son asked for a new baseball room for his 7th birthday, so my husband and I decided to surprise him while he was away on a small camping trip with his grandparent’s. I knew I wanted to make the room kid friendly, yet classy, so that he could enjoy it now and also as he gets older.
The process:  First, I painted the walls, ceiling and trim. Second, we purchased large faux brick panels from Lowes for the accent wall. I didn’t particularly care for the red and black color that came on the panels, but I loved the look of the brick, so I decided to whitewash and sand them down to make the bricks look more realistic. After we hung the panels, we added a “dugout” to serve as the focal point for the room. In the dugout I created a desk for my son that looks like an old-worn bench. I carried the same wood over to the left side of the room and used it as wall shelves to tie the areas together. The wood was reclaimed from my husband’s grandparent’s old barn. The poles are wood spindles that I spray painted with silver paint, so they would look like the metal legs that are typically on a dugout bench.  I also painted the stool that goes with it. I found it at a yard sale for $3 and it was the perfect fit! I then found the lockers at another yard sale for $25 each. I cleaned them up, painted them black and now they serve as excellent place to store toys!  I re-did the chest-of-drawers, too. The previous owners left it, so thankfully it was free! I wanted it to go along with the locker theme, so I painted it black and added numbers to it. As far as the accent pieces go, I made my son a large scoreboard to hang over his bed and carried the theme over to the sign that is also in his dugout. The scoreboard has chalkboard slats on it, so he can actually write on it if he wants! Both items make a huge impact and the scoreboard is functional! Win – win! I “fluffed” the room with a few sentimental items that date back 4 generations in our families, such as the ball gloves, an umpire counter, baseballs, bats, etc.  For a few other special touches, I added 1, 2, 3 (strikes you’re out) baseball hat hangers, baseball knobs on the doors, a baseball lamp, bedding and a couple of cute pictures of him and his t-ball teams.
It was such a fun room to redo and it was pocket friendly since we did all of the work ourselves. Plus, most of the items were reclaimed or I purchased them from yard sales. We all love to hang out in the room now! I definitely think we hit it out of the park!
