Navy & Blush Nursery

I was already obsessed with navy and when we found out we were having a girl, blush was the perfect soft compliment to balance out our already dark “guest room” walls to transition it to a nursery.
Most of the items in Sophia’s nursery have been curated from flea markets and Craigslist over the past several years.  I spray painted the faux wood dresser white and rubbed the hardware with gold Rub’n buff. I found the chandelier 5 years ago, and finally took it to a lamp store to get fixed, then cleaned and spray painted it copper.  The largest project was the rocking loveseat, which I spotted for FREE on the side of the road down the street from our house.  It was old, smelly, dusty and discussing, but luckily my mom and sister are very supportive of my vision and helped me remove the nasty upholstery. It was hours and hours of work, wearing masks and goggles. I ended up paying an upholsterer to reupholster it with white denim fabric, with nailhead trim, and I stained the wood. I just love the way it turned out and I can’t wait to sit on it with my little girl as we read books.
The closet system was a huge undertaking as a pregnant woman. I hung temporary wallpaper on the back wall, and built the shelf system, with the help of my mom.
The artwork has been collected from home goods, a shop in Portland, and Etsy. My husband is Norwegian and I have Swedish roots, so I love the dala horse print as a nod to Sophia’s Scandinavian ethnicity.  I found that on Etsy from a Swedish vendor.

Sports + Travel Boy’s Room

When deciding on how to convert our son’s room from nursery to big boy room, it was really simple: I wanted to pick things that he loved and would make him want to be in his room.  Originally it was going to be a railroad themed room, but changed to travel when he started showing interest in going on road trips.  I put a railroad sign above his bed, and lots of road signs, license plates, and even a large map on the walls. He also developed a passion for anything sports (if you asked him to pick between watching a cartoon and a football game, he would pick football everytime!), so that expanded the theme to sports + travel.  One of my favorite quotes is ‘Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.’ from the football television show ‘Friday Night Lights.’  So naturally, I incorporated that into his room. We also put little sports figurines and my husband’s baseball glove.  My husband built the barn door to replace the standard closet door. This is one of our son’s favorite things because he thinks it looks like a railroad crossing.  My favorite piece in this room is the locker that I found at our local antique store.  I simply spray painted it black and painted numbers on it.  I also found all of the license plates at the antique store.  My biggest suggestion is to incorporate old pieces and new pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix.  Several things in this room are hand-me-downs.  For example, the white desk was mine as a child, and the chair and toolbox were my grandfather’s.

Alice In Wonderland Themed Nursery

This room has easily become one of our favorites in the house. So much time, thought, and love went into this sweet space. With a shared love of Alice in Wonderland, we intertwined subtle elements throughout while attempting to create a calm, serene, & welcoming atmosphere for our little one. Vintage pieces, family sentiments, & memories are sprinkled throughout her nursery & we can’t wait till she is makes her entrance to complete our little family.

Baby Elle’s Eclectic Coastal Nursery

I chose this project because I wanted to create a space for my little girl that had meaning, and that reflected not only our tastes but that also told the story of our very long journey into parenthood. Our little rainbow baby was seven years in the making, following two consecutive miscarriages and nearly three years of trying with no results, so I knew that I wanted this little part of our home to be special.
I pulled inspiration for the room from all over! Passages from my favorite books from when I was a little girl added whimsy and wonder. Special places from our travels together as a couple gave meaning to accessories. All of this, along with our part of the globe and our lifestyle on the coast, lent to the color scheme and the design direction of the room.
A few of my favorites items give even more meaning to the space. The white photo frame on the bookshelf houses pieces of pink tissue paper from our Gender Reveal party, a fun reminder of the very moment we found out that we were having a baby girl! Sitting on the nursing chair is Flavia Flamingo, included in the space as a nod to our home state of Florida. And next to her, is a pineapple pillow that reminds us of Hawai’i -our favorite travel destination and locale of our Baby Moon. And speaking of Hawai’i, the two gallery prints that adorn either side of the window are among my favorite photographs taken during our Baby Moon in Maui. Being a professional photographer, I wanted to reiterate the importance of incorporating personal artwork into a design, and I also wanted Elle to look at these photographs and know that she is so loved, and that Mom and Dad are always with her.
And, because no space in this DIY’ers home would be complete without a little something homemade, I included the rustic stump end table next to the nursing chair. I thought not only did it add a bit of whimsy to the room, but it also gave me the opportunity to include something unique to the space, something I made just for it. Dad also contributed big time! My husband is VERY handy, and we managed to do all of that double dentil crown moulding ourselves for under $150!
I learned a lot along the way while we were creating this space, but I’d have to say that my biggest piece of advice for those just starting on this process is to stay true to who you are. It’s easy to get lost on Pinterest and to follow trends, but in the end, you’ll be most pleased with a room that reflects your tastes as a family and tells your story.
