Boho Chic Kids Playroom

A couple months back I was asked to speak at an event in collaboration with Microsoft and BizNest, a co-working space in Miami that specifically caters to working parents that want to bring their kiddos into an office where they are taken care of, can learn and be creative AND the parents can also work and thrive and know their kiddo is in great hands.  After I committed, my now dear friend casually says…”Oh and Ann, they have this small daycare that needs some love.  I would love for you to design it.”  I was incredibly honored to get asked to do this.  I had 4 weeks to create the vision, moodboards, find a partner (for this project Overstock was the sponsor) source the products, order the products, clean out the existing space, install and have it ready for the event.  It was nothing short of a miracle that all of that happened!
My vision for the space was:  bright, boho-chic, pops of color, playful and functional.  I didn’t want the space to be TOO childish, especially given the age range was very broad – from infants to teenagers.  I wanted the space to have ample seating, to feel warm and to create an environment where the kids could thrive.
See for yourself and check out the full list of sources below.  My biggest tip for all of you out there when designing a kids space – use adult furniture and adult products!  As you can see from the pictures and the sources below, 95% of what I curated for the space were items adults could use in their homes/apartments.  It’s a matter of context and creativity!

Serene Earthy Modern Vintage Nursery

We already have two older kids who are 11&12 so much of our nursery was inspired by what our family already loves and things that are sentimental, such as dinosaurs which we featured in the wallpapered closet.  I also love vintage furniture, so the furniture was all thrifted and vintage, with exception to the crib of course (we chose a Babyletto Modo).
All of the details as well as product links are on my blog and I thought that might be easier to share. :)

A Nursery That Will Grow With Baby Boy

We bought our house when I was almost 5 months pregnant and raced against the clock to totally gut and remodel it before our Baby Boy was due to arrive on Valentine’s Day. We tore out all of the baseboard, installed new trim, doors, painted the walls, and resanded/stained the floor before decorating the space to personalize it for our first baby! Spoiler alert… we finished the construction with one weekend to spare before baby’s arrival. It was a crazy few months but so rewarding to bring our little guy home to a house we put so much love into before he arrived!

Nathan’s Light & Airy Boho-Modern Nursery

When designing my son’s nursery, I didn’t want to use a “theme” or make it super baby-ish.  I knew I’d be spending a lot of time in here and wanted to make it a space that reflects my style and fits in with the rest of our house.  I tend to gravitate towards mid-century modern/ bohemian style interiors so that is the direction I went with.
We already had the dresser that I had painted navy blue – it was my husband’s as a child, so we thought it would be nice to use that as our son’s dresser/changing table.  I wanted a bold rug since everything else would be relatively neutral.  I found his rug on Rugs USA and knew it would be perfect to make a statement!  Painting his door green was kind of a spur of the moment decision.  I already had the paint from a different project and thought it would be fun to break up all the white!
To help keep my design organized, I created a mood board with photos of everything.  This helped me make sure everything worked together and also stopped me from making impulse purchases (for the most part)!!  I’m always changing little things about his nursery, but I try to stick to an uncluttered and airy vibe.  I love how it turned out and am excited for when the time comes to transition it to a big boy room!

Starry Night

TINY SPOTS ROUND TWO!
Words cannot describe how happy interior design makes me, mix kids decor in that and I am in heaven… If only it could turn into a career! Most of you are familiar with the Monochrome nursery I did back before Dom was born, for those wandering what the F happened to it…we moved back in November and had to leave it behind. However, it was bittersweet because here we are sharing another project with you again!!
I cant say that my planning process was an easy one… last time I knew the theme right away and then just shopped around for decor with that theme in mind. This time around, I knew I wanted to step out of my comfort zone by adding a little more color juussssst a little! lol and of course make it FUN because Dom is such a fun & energetic kid, and he needed a space with a little more spunk. I really wasn’t clear on the theme until about a month ago when I stumbled across The Lovely Wall Co and their BEAUTIFUL wall decals. Starry Night was the name of the collection that caught my eye. One thing Petey said he wanted to see in the room were more stars so this one was perfect, so perfect I decided to jack the name for the nursery too lol.
The accent corner with the Sprinkle decals is defiantly my favorite, looking at it now I wish i would have done the triangle the opposite way, it would have made for a pretty cute backdrop. This was the first part of the room that we started on and my idea for an accent wall completely changed once i starred at the wall for 5 minutes lol. We originally were going to make the wall to the left the accent with overlapping squares and i changed my mind last minute. We did the triangle by simply using painters tape to make the lines and then painted along them. small tip: make sure your REALLY press down on the tape so it grabs onto the wall as close as it can, we had a few spots that bled through causing the line to not be so crisp.
Isn’t that little flag garland just THE cutest?! That’s what lead me to a decision on the colors, i absolutely loved the color palate. (this specific color is sold out but i did tag one that is similar) I may snag a few more because I think it looks lonely by itself. I recently discovered Scandiborn and made it my new go-to for kids stuff, literally everything is so cute & unique. I am SO excited to say that i will be giving away one of their beanbags that you all were in love with so head to my Instagram to enter that!
I’m sure you’ve noticed by now but I have a strong love for Babyletto furniture, for this room I knew I wanted a bookshelf because Dom LOVES his books, like really loves them… maybe it has something to do with the fact that I started reading to him when he was 3 days old? He was mesmerized…(lmk if you wanna see the pic from that moment lol its super cute) we have moments where we leave him playing in his room and all of a sudden he is so quiet… we go to see what he’s doing and he is literally just looking at his books by himself, it melts my heart! Start reading to your babes young!
We are renting the house we are in so we unfortunately wont get to enjoy this space for very long.. this was a big factor in the whole design process because i wanted to do something fun but also didn’t want to do anything too permanent and the fact that the decals are removable was a game changer, i can even save some for the next room if i wanted!
I loved creating this space, it was so cute to watch Dom walk into it for the first time… I should have recorded it! This has definitely become a new passion of mine, I plan on sharing all of the spaces I design & hope you will all follow along and be inspired to create your own. I hope you guys like this one as much as the first!! Let me know your thoughts :D
Don’t forget to find me on Instagram @betweenthebabes and enter my GIVEAWAY, one person will WIN some of the items featured in this room!!  You can also find exclusive coupons on my blog post www.betweenthebabes.com as well as the paint color i used, keep in mind these photos were taken in low light so a little editing had to be done to brighten the room up a bit so the paint does look a little lighter than it is in real life.
