A Turquoise Tween Bedroom

Description

Taylor's mom decided to surprise her for her 11th birthday with a sophisticated new space featuring her favorite color.

Design Inspiration

I started with the idea that if we could make a big impact with her favorite color on the ceiling, the rest of the room could be a little less bold.  Colorful yellow accents keep things from being too one dimensional with just turquoise and white.

Decorating Style

New traditional.  I like traditional silhouettes interpreted in more modern ways whether that be updated colors or unexpected patterns.

Favorite Items

My favorite items in the room are the hanging chair from Serena & Lily and the beautiful capiz light from Pottery Barn.  But really, what could top that dramatic ceiling?!  An incredible DIY project by Taylor's parents.

Advice

It's all about the mix.  This room uses vintage items alongside high end items alongside Target and IKEA finds.  Together they create an eclectic, collected mix that keep the room interesting and sophisticated.  For a tween room, I think it's important to incorporate as much seating as you can.  They love to hang out with friends so you want to make it as comfortable as possible.

Centering a large bow on your mantel garland is a good way to capitalize on the attraction of symmetrical décor on a naturally symmetrical feature.
