Description
We wanted to create a calm, neutral-colored environment for our son's nursery. The bird theme was inspired by a pillow that I found at a specialty store, as well as the vintage bird prints.
Design Inspiration
The bird pillow and wall prints were the main inspirations for this room. I used them as jumping off points for the colors used in the room. I did not want the room to say "traditional baby boy." I wanted something unique and different.
Decorating Style
I love clean lines, neutral colors with punches of color and a bit of a vintage, "shabby chic" look thrown in.
Project Details
We kept the walls neutral, with a "beige sand" color. The creme colored trunk and the night stand table were flea market finds. The rocking chair is a family heirloom, as well as the dark wood "moses cradle", which my husband's grandfather made for him when he was born.
The wall monogram was an Ebay find, the vintage bird postcards were found on Etsy. I used yarn to hang them for a softer look, and all were dated between 1957-59. The vintage bird prints were found at a specialty home decor store, as well as the pillow.
The willow branches, lamp, nesting boxes and wall picture/card frame are all from Pier 1.
The willow branches are painted black with silver sparkles, and some were kept natural wood.
Favorite Items
I love the vintage postcards! They were a fun find. I also love the colors of the ribbons used as tie-backs on the curtains as well as the bow around the lamp.
Advice
Don't be afraid to mix patterns and shades, as well as cremes and whites. The beige color on the walls makes the white crib and changing table pop just enough.
I plan to add a wrought iron chandelier and some shadow boxes to complete the room.
Hi Annanorene. I really like the simple and soothing feel of this room. Do you mind sharing where you got your crib bedding? I’ve been looking for something very similar.
Hi Annanorene: Yes, I’d have to agree that they add a bit of whimsy. If ever there was to be a classical/whimsical accent, this should be it :) Lovely lovely room :)
Your baby is very lucky to be able to use heirloom pieces. It’s so nice of your husband to still be able to keep the cradle his grandad made for him when he was still a baby. The cradle and the rocking chair are, without doubt, the most priceless items in this room. And she’ll be able to keep them until she’s grown up and has kids of her own.
I like your use of earth tones. It surely is calm and relaxing, and I am sure your baby will love this.
Thanks! They add a bit of whimsy too :)
Oh my, the vintage bird prints are absolutely beautiful. Your theme is very unique and charming. I have seen a few bird themes, but this vintage bird inspiration is the first of its kind I saw.
