Modern Under the Sea Nursery

Description

I fell in love with this modern under the sea crib bedding before I even knew if I was going to have a boy or a girl. Good thing it could go either way. I was on a very tight budget with this room so I made a lot of what is in the room or I bought something that was very inexpensive and altered it to make it look like more than it was. My only item that I was sad I couldn't get was the Eames molded plastic rocker. That would have made this room perfect!

Design Inspiration

My inspiration was the bedding.  I always like to start with the bedding and work my way outward pulling colors and textures from there.

Decorating Style

I'm usually pretty fuctional in my design, but also theme oriented.  I don't like a lot of clutter so less is definitely more for me.

Project Details

My favorite shops on this project were Michael's and Joanne's.  I made a lot of the items in this room and because of that it seems all that more special to me.

Crib Canopy - Bought a basic white canopy and embellished it with green tulle and ribbon.  When baby was big enough to stand I tied the sides of the canopy back to the wall with curtain holdbacks.

Lamp - Added extra green ball trim to the bottom of the shade to give it a more custom look.

Floor Lamp - Added white fringe and blue ribbon to the bottom of the shade to give it a jellyfish look.

Bubbles On Wall - Were cut out of sticky back paper using a compass and an exacto knife.

Light Fixture Bubble Shade - Made using differnt sizes of knitting circles overlapped and glued together.  Holes were drilled in the rings so that the bubble strings could be attached.  The strings were ordered pre-assembled.  I then glued brackets to the inner ring so I could attach it to the ceiling.

Bookcases - I painted the back panel of the bookcases to make them pop.

Favorite Items

I love the light fixture and the crib canopy.  I'm probably partial to these items because I made them myself.

Advice

Don't be afraid to create things yourself.  I was on a pretty tight budget with this, so when I couldn't find a crib canopy that was in my price range, I made it.  When I couldn't find a light fixture in my price range that looked just the way I wanted it to, I made it.  When I couldn't find a mobile that looked exactly like I wanted it to, I made it.  I even made the stoll cusions, the crib pillow, and the octopus doll on the chair.

I have had this image in my head of a soft underwater, not too cartoony room and this is it!!! I didn't think I could do it with the sets they have out there. What a beautiful room. Do you know what color you used for the wall? I have been looking but still not able to find the right blue...

Thanks everyone!

Natalie - The bedding set is from Migi and it's called "Splash".  I think you can order it on Amazon.

Dandelion - Yes, I sewed the stool covers and octopus myself out of some fabric I bought.  The diaper pail cover is also out of this fabric.  I also didn't use the diaper stacker that came with the bedding set so I cut it up and made a pillow and a fish doll.

Cute nursery. I like cool refreshing colors. I like your bubble-inspired light fixture, and your curtains too. And hey, those cute little blue-and-green stools by the window match that octopus softie. Did you make both softie and stool covers?
