Modern Boy Nursery

Description

This is the nursery that will be the home to our first baby!

Design Inspiration

I had saved pictures of nurseries I liked on pinterest. Once I knew what we were having, I picked elements from nurseries that I liked to make one that was right for our baby.

Decorating Style

The nursery is a mix of traditional and modern. I chose items that were made in America or as close as I could get to being made without dangerous chemicals. I knew we wanted a nice glider and that is where most of our money went (aside from clothes).

Project Details

Paint color - Dolphin Fin by Behr

Crib - Baby Mod Modena

Dresser and side table - Ikea Hemnes, painted to match the crib (it's more of an antique white when you buy it)

Shelves - Lowes

Gallery wall pictures - made by my sister in law, frames are Ikea Ribba

Glider - Best Chairs style Ayla

Baby bedding, curtains, pillow - www.babybedding.com

Mirror - Target, painted all black

Bulletin board - made using this tutorial: http://www.athoughtfulplaceblog.com/2011/11/diy-bulletin-board.html

Chevron Blanket - http://www.etsy.com/shop/SparklesSewShop

3 painted canvases of animals and stuffed elephant- http://www.etsy.com/shop/LilSunshineStudio

Striped canvas - made by me

Canvas baskets in closet - Martha Stewart from Home Depot

Favorite Items

The glider - it's so comfy and perfect for the room. I also love the chevron blanket - it was very well made.

Advice

Have fun! It was important to have the husband help enjoy the process of designing the nursery so it would be something we would remember doing together to prepare for the baby. I loved sitting in the glider every night looking at what we had accomplished each week while the baby kicked in agreement that he approved!

Beautiful nursery! Did you secure the changing table topper onto the dresser or it is sitting freely on it? Thanks!

  2. […] make you smile with their creativity and thoughtfulness.  Thank you to all who submitted to the Gallery– everyone did a great job.  Before you go off into weekend mode, please don’t forget […]

  3. avatar Julie says:

Beautiful nursery! Can you tell me the fabric name / number you chose for the glider?

  4. avatar Alex Darling says:

First of all, I love the nursery and hope your little one is enjoying it!! Second, I know you said that you painted the dresser to match the crib… did you spray paint it?? Did you use a shiny finish?? Thanks!

  5. Where did you get the changing top?

  6. avatar Kerri says:

I am interested to know as well about what you used for the dresser. I just got the dresser but I thought it was more white. LOVE your nursery!!!

  7. avatar Lauren says:

I can’t believe I found your post!! We bought the SAME dresser and crib and discovered today that they do not match! We have never painted furniture before. Do you have to sand it down first and then apply the paint? Do you happen to know the paint color you used? Oh, and do you still like both of these items now that you have used them for a while?
    Thank you!

  8. avatar Sara says:

    Lovely!
How do you like the glider? We are shopping for one now and have found so many to be uncomfortable….Have you found this one to be comfy? And how is the height of the back? Can you lean your head back and snooze at 3am?

  9. avatar Kelly says:

Erin – they just secured like any other crib. You can see where I tied them in the pictures. I did take the bumpers down once the baby started sleeping in the crib, but have recently put up wonder bumpers because he was already getting limbs stuck even though he is being swaddled.

Rebecca – the nursery is still the exact same except for the bumper switch up. I designed it to function and look nice! The dresser is the ikea 8 drawer hemnes and holds a ton of items.

  10. avatar Rebecca says:

The nursery looks amazing! Does it prove to be pretty functional, or did you rearrange more once your son came? Also, I LOVE the dresser. I looked at IKEA and it is only 2 drawers for the style that you mentioned…

  11. avatar Erin says:

I’m considering the same crib. Wondering how did you secure the bumpers on the ends where it’s a solid panel vs slats???

  12. avatar Kerri says:

This is by far the neatest nursery on project nursery that I have seen. Really inspiring and I’m having a girl!

  13. avatar Kelly says:

Megan – my husband said he removed the mirror and spray painted the frame.

Misty – we bought the curtains from babybedding.com – check out the website and email them. I think I saw the fabric on there.

  14. avatar Misty says:

Did you make the curtins your self? We are doing the crib set in the same fabric but the gray and pink for a girl.

  15. avatar Megan says:

Adorable nursery! I bought the same Target mirror for my nursery and I want to paint it white. Did you use spray paint or a brush? Did you remove the frame or just tape something over it?

  16. avatar Erin says:

I found the organizer by doing some google searches. Here is the site –

  17. avatar kate says:

Very cute nursery! Where did you find the little organizing bowl collage on the changing table?

  18. avatar Liz h says:

Hi! Very cute nursery! Where did you find the circular tube-like organizer on the dresser? Thanks!!

  19. avatar Ashley says:

I’m a little over the moon right now!!! I have been getting a few hits here and there in my shop from this website so i came looking. it’s so neat to see something i made in it’s “natural habitat” I love your nursery design!!! and congrats on your new arrival!!!

  20. avatar Janna says:

I love the the little picture quote that you have on the shelf that reads no one will ever know the stength of my love for you…. its so precious where did you get it?

  21. avatar Kelly says:

Gena – it was my sister in law who made it

  22. avatar April S says:

    Kelly,

Oh thank you so much for sharing! That’s awesome, and so simple! I might be making something similar for our nursery too :)

  23. avatar Gena says:

What vendor did you get the printout for “No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you…”

  24. avatar Kim says:

How much was the glider :)

  25. avatar Kelly says:

Also April, it was just a flat changing pad from Babies R Us inside. We just bought fabric to match the rest of the room and made our own from online tutorials.

  26. avatar Kelly says:

April – my husband just bought some wood from Home Depot, painted it, and put it together. We put it on top of the dresser with 3M strips so it will be removable. It cost next to nothing.

D’arcy – the owl is from Pier 1.

  27. avatar Gena says:

Such a cute nursery! Perfect amount of detail and theme. Yes, please tell us more on the changing pad topper

  28. avatar D'arcy says:

Beautiful nursery. You have done an excellent job. Do you remember where the owl in the crib is from? I love it.

  29. avatar April S says:

Such a cute nursery! I love it! The wall color is just what I’ve been looking for :) Also, would you mind telling me more about your changing pad? I love that it’s enclosed in a frame, and was curious if you made that, or purchased it somewhere? I’m hoping to put our changing pad on a dresser as well, and the size of yours looks like it will fit our smallish dresser!

  30. avatar Kim says:

How much was the glider and ottoman if you don’t mind me asking?

  31. avatar Tina Rowan says:

This is wonderful. Such a warm, peaceful place….

  32. avatar Carol Sobolewski Drace says:

Beautiful! Best wishes on the coming baby!

  33. avatar Kathy Sobol says:

    Very restful nursey

  34. avatar Kelly says:

The frames are Ikea ribba – the one of the shelf is from Michaels

  35. avatar jacknjilly says:

I forgot to say I love your nursery. Very inspiring.

  36. avatar jacknjilly says:

Where did you get the white frames?

  37. avatar Kelly says:

Thanks Gena! Pinterest is so great for getting ideas.

Courtney – it was actually a clearance lamp from Babies r us that was brown and blue. I spray painted it white to match the nursery! I got the idea from project nursery!

  38. avatar courtney e. says:

adorable!! where did you find the darling white elephant/giraffe lamp?

  39. avatar Rebecca Meier says:

    Emily,

Emily – the quote is also on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/pin/114630752984913525/.

  40. avatar Gena says:

This is SO creative. I love it! And I am just getting into pinterest so you have truly inspired me. Congrats on your little one!!

  41. avatar Kelly says:

They don’t sell it online. It can be found in stores only for $20.

  42. avatar Nicky says:

I love the mirror. You said it was from Target. Any chance you know the name of it. I can’t find it online.
    Warmly,

  43. avatar Kelly says:

Emily – I originally saw it on etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/69120362/strength-of-my-love-word-art-sign-the It is made on wood and was too expensive at $90 so my sister in law just made it in adobe for me and I printed it at kinkos.

  44. avatar Emily says:

I love this room, it’s sophisticated and cozy at the same time. You and your baby are going to make so many wonderful memories in your beautiful nursery.

I hate to ask a question after you were so thorough, but could you tell me where you found the “you heard my heart from the inside” print? It is so touching, I would love it for my baby girls nursery.

  45. avatar Rachel says:

    the chevron blanket is amazing!

  46. avatar Mary McDonald says:

Absolutely the best boy’s room I have ever seen. Wonderful contrast and also comfy for mom, dad and baby. Congratulations to you both on your new little blessing.
