Out little client loved geography so our first quest was to find a way to incorporate traveling elements to his room without being excessively themey. We wanted something elegant, inspirational and yet fun for a 6-year-old boy.
The starting point was a world map into the room. We went the approach that there is no half measure here - let's make the map the feature. We also selected the
world map mural with a laminated finish so that the future traveler could mark places on the map that could then easily be cleaned - an interactive design element perfect for the curious and creative mind. To avoid it looking like a classroom, we added a custom wood frame around the entire piece.
Modern with a traditional twist
The room is filled with items such as the
Ducduc Campaign bed ,
red vintage plane money box, a
retro route 66 sign (also a homage to the family's previous home in California). We used
colored cork panels and
chalkboard paint behind the desk for a fun area to collect images and do homework. We used the versatile
Manx FLOR tiles on the floor.
More details can be found in our
blog post.
Our favorite pieces are the modern
ducduc's Morgan's Desk - with the
iconic eames dowel chair - and another mid-century modern piece, the
devon chair.
