Baby Hoots’ Nursery

Description

With a last name Hoots, I couldn't resist an owl themed nursery. Although I'm not usually crazy about themes, I'm pleased with how it turned out!

Design Inspiration

I first found the owl prints on etsy and built the room around them.  I knew I wanted to stay away from pastels and I was drawn to the bright prints.  I went with gray walls, white furniture, and pops of color.

Decorating Style

Wish I had one!

Project Details

A friend painted the wall murals.  My mom made the valence and the book sling.  Changing table and shelves from IKEA.  Bedding is from Skip Hop, Mod Dot collection.  Lamp is from Home Goods.

Favorite Items

A tie between the tree mural and the book sling.

Advice

Stay away from baby stores when decorating and if you choose to do a theme, resist the urge to buy everything you find relating to the theme.  Owls are everywhere and it would be easy to over do it.

Did your mom freehand the tree mural? It is exactly what I am looking for, but I can’t draw a straight line, so I have to either find a premade stencil or decal.

Love your nursery!!!! Where did you get the bedding?

  3. avatar Brandy says:

Please include how your mother made that book sling, it’s adorable and something I’d love to make for both my boys rooms! Love your baby room :)

Useful info. Lucky me I found your web site by accident, and I am surprised why this twist of fate did not came about in advance! I bookmarked it.

    lindsey,

I don’t remember this being a problem, although when we first painted I was afraid it would be too dark. There are so many grey shades, which I found a bit overwhelming. I tried to pick a “true” grey and sort of got lucky. I painted my bathroom grey and it had a blue tint like yours, which was good for the bathroom but I didn’t want that for the nursery.

when yall first painted the walls, did they appear bluish grey?
ive primed a small section then applied my choice of grey.
for some reason it still looks a tad bit blue.
i was wondering if you ran into this problem.
    thanks,
    Lindsey

i love this room! great job! i have kindof the same color theme in mind for my nursery to be & am going to use owls as part of the decor. where did you get the prints that are above the crib? again great job on the room – you have a very lucky baby that will get to enjoy this room & he can grow with it to!!

  26. avatar Ahoots says:

Thank you all.  Rweithers – I looked on the paint can – it has the formula, but not the name and I forget!  I was afraid it was going to be too dark, but I like how it turned out with the white contrast of the trees.  SharoniNoni – I found the fabric at Joanns, don’t know who made it.

  27. avatar SharoniNoni says:

Great work and lovely colour combinations.  Did you purchase your fabric for the valence and book sling locally or from the Internet?  Do you know the name of the designer?

  28. avatar rweithers says:

I love your nursery! Especially the book sling. You did a wonderful job of combining a more modern feel with childhood whimsy.  May I ask you what paint colour you used on the walls?

  29. avatar wenbow says:

Very well put together, and I like your advice about staying out of big box baby stores.  Great murals, tell your friend and mom kudos on the painting and fabric items!  It really makes the room.
