“On the Night You Were Born” Inspired 1st Birthday

The first time I read Nancy Tillman’s “On the Night You Were Born”, I was holding my three month old baby boy, Hudson.  The lines in the book brought tears to my eyes because they were so special…so magical…just like my beautiful baby.  When it came time to start planning his first birthday party, I knew I wanted something as sweet, unique, & as wonderful as he is.  “On the Night You Were Born” became the perfect inspiration for his celebration.  I have never seen a party inspired by this precious book so I had to do a lot of thinking to pull it together.  I wanted all of the elements of the party to represent things that were special to Hudson & my family.  We live in the south so Carolina style barbecue was the perfect menu.  The dessert table consisted of the most gorgeous blue ombre cake I have ever seen.  The baker perfectly matched the hues of the night sky in the book.  Grandma made her homemade sugar cookies into “H’s” and “1’s”.  I wanted the party favor to be a fun craft for young children that represented something about the night to perfectly tie into the theme.  The guests & their parents loved the personalized bug catchers!  The centerpieces were mason jars filled  with moss grass and white & yellow balloons to keep the look rustic yet young & fun!  There are elements from the book throughout such as the red cardinal, the polar bears, the night sky peeking in the window, & the stars.

Pinwheel 1st Birthday Party Cake

Pinwheel First Birthday

We used a pinwheel theme for our son’s first birthday.  He doesn’t have any favorite cartoons or characters right now so we didn’t want to do a character theme party at this point.

Girl 1st Birthday Party

Ella’s First Birthday

I was so happy when I was asked to help with this birthday party, I knew from our first conversations that this party would be GREAT! EAE Personalized Creations did the print work and Ella’s Momma did all the leg work. I couldnt be happier with how this sweet party turned out ;)

“ONE” to Grow On

I wanted to do an outdoor first birthday party. I also wanted to save cost by using things I already had around the house. I love all things natural. I used moss, moss balls, and furniture that I already had and decorated around those things.

Kitty Themed Party Cat Art

Kitty Themed 1st Birthday Party

For my daughters 1st birthday party, I decided on a kitty theme. She loves our cat and it has been one of her first words. I painted a pink kitty to be displayed. I also want to take her photo next to the kitty each year on her birthday to see how she has grown.
I found a darling red and white fabric to use for our tablecloth. I then used old tin cans to hold flowers cut from our yard. The plastic kitties I bought online and the kids liked playing with them.
The cake was in the shape of a kitty, sort of. You get the idea:) I used coconut on top to look like fur.
I took my daughters photo on the same day once a week so I ended up with 52 photos. I hung those on string with clothes pins to admire her photos while we ate. We liked seeing how she has grown and deciding who she looks like.
I cut fabrics in circles and squares and sewed them together to create the garland that I hung from the ceilings in the dining room, living room and kitchen.
I also purchased honeycomb tissue balls to hang together as 3 and then hang from the ceiling.
I made kitty ears out of gray fabric hot glued onto plastic headbands. The inner part of the ear on a kitty that is normally pink, was red and pink from our fabric. They are laying next to the picture of the cake.
We had a salad bar for supper. My daughter likes to eat blueberries, plain chicken, avocado and I wanted to serve something she would enjoy. I bought to go boxes from Publix and precut all of my salad toppings. It was beautiful and really good.

Levi’s First Birthday Party-Monkey and Banana!

We wanted Levi’s birthday to be fun and bright but not too babyish. We used themes of monkeys and bananas as well as chevron in bright colors. Almost everything was home-made including desserts and the DIY decor.

Graham’s Wild Rumpus First Birthday

I have always loved parties based on books, and since Where the Wild Things Are is one of my all-time favorite children’s books, I knew it had to be our theme for Graham’s first birthday. I’ve actually had this theme in mind ever since I was pregnant with him and purchased a print for his nursery that includes a line from the book.

Ischa’s First Birthday!

My son turned one and they say the first birthday is the birthday for the mother. Well, I took advantage of it! I wanted to give him a special first birthday.
In our country they don’t make dessert tables and the decoration doesn’t go beyond balloons en screaming colours. I wanted to make something original. Project Nursery have been a great inspiration!
