In honor of Earth Day, we thought we would end this week of our eco-friendly focus with a Pow! Whop! Kabaam! The imagination is a beautiful thing. To see your child grow and play pretend is heartwarming. And when they insist on wearing last Halloween's Disney princess or pirate costume to school, it can be challenging.  Mom, Jossamber Shapiro became tired of tacking dish towels to the back of her son's shirts while he and his friends went through the "Superhero phase". She and dear friend Jessica Wise then realized the need to create Little Capers.  Little Capers are 100% cotton with detachable capes. They retail for $35 (with many on sale now too!) and I keep thinking how much joy my son will get from running around the house in one of these. And just for the sake of name dropping, celebrities such as Brooke Shields, Patrick Dempsey, Teri Polo and Joely Richardson are fans of Little Capers too! Move over Superman, because now your little one can aspire to be an Earth Day-man or woman. Little Capers is giving away an "Earth Hero" shirt of your choice to one Super! Project Nursery reader. After all, isn't "Saving the Earth" what a Superhero is all about! WIN IT: By commenting on this post with your favorite Superhero design AND/OR share ways you are teaching your child to save planet earth - Now that's a hero! Each year on Earth Day there are more and more ideas to help us reduce, re-use and recycle. This must mean we are moving in the right direction. I found myself thinking about how I could incorporate a few new things into my family's daily routine to help make a difference. I have to admit that I was inspired after catching half of Oprah's Earth Day show yesterday. That woman really does have a way of motivating. We've already introduced some terrific Eco-friendly products and styles this week and here comes another one. It's a great and unique, all-natural cotton sleepsack from New Zealand based company Peke Moe. A small family business, Peke Moe is developed and run by a mother/daughters team who needed a solution to the ordinary swaddle blanket. They found that no matter which swaddle they tried, their little ones would "Houdini" their way out. This is such a common issue for parents everywhere who rely on the swaddle at sleep time but once their baby breaks free of the wrap they can not self soothe and get back to sleep. This means a series of wake up calls throughout the night. Agony!  What I love about the Peke Moe sleep bags is that the roomier design which is shaped more like a bag or blanket and allows for versatility with swaddling. Many sleep bags on the market are more structured and are only appropriate for the newborn stage. The Peke Moe sleep bag can be used as your …

Just like Melisa, I was pretty new to the whole world of "Eco-friendly" until babies came into my life. I have sure learned a lot in the past five years and it feels really good that this week's posts are focused on products and people that have made helping our vast planet a priority. Today, I would like to introduce you to Sherry Stein of S. Stein Design, an established bag designer with a new industrial-chic bag for the modern baby set. Sherry was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to talk to Project Nursery about her career, inspirations and this fab new BABY CASE. Sherry has been in the design industry for many years and has design gigs at Nike (back when there were only 18 designers on staff!) and Gap under her belt. Eventually, Sherry decided the corporate world wasn't where her heart was and set out to do what she loved which was focus her energy on her own line of bags and clothes. With a love of vintage leather and canvas work bags as her inspiration, such as her father's camera case from 1948, S Stein Design was born. The BABY CASE is the latest addition to Sherry's collection. Although Sherry has had plenty of baby experience being a mother and grandmother, she set out to understand the modern parent and to design a bag specifically for them. She collected all the essential items that makes a parent on-the-go tick like bottles, cups, wipes, creams, …

Nearly three years ago when I set out to design my son's nursery, making it eco-friendly was  relatively low on my list of priorities. Maybe I was just naive or maybe it was because my options were limited. In just a few short years however, my mentality has changed for the better and so have retailers.  Terrific children's boutiques and designers are now making a difference. We kick off our "Week of Earth Day" at Project Nursery with some serious eco-friendly finds. Here are just a few faves to get us started... Pam and I started blogging just a year ago, about the same time as our blogging buddies at Tiny Decor. While we are slackers and didn't come up with anything clever to celebrate our year, the Tiny Decor Blog is sharing their "Blogiversary" with some stylish eco-nursery swag valued at $300. Just share your child's eco-friendly room to enter. We look forward to checking in to see the results. If you are like me - working to make things a bit more green, visit their shop of all organic materials and original designs. "Who says eco-friendly has to be boring!?!" says Jennifer Owner/Designer of Turtle Park Tots. I agree with you Jennifer. Eco-friendly fabrics used to mean "off white" or "natural" but no longer and Turtle Park Tots can prove it with their modern, hip  and practical designs for baby. Muralist Christine Bryant of The Spotted Moon Art Company has recently introduced us to old fashioned Milk Paint, …

Anyone else love that song "Crazy ABCs" by the Barenaked Ladies? Yes, I'm talking about that same band with the 1999 pop favorite "One Week". They've gone kid friendly and even scored an album of the year award for their children's album "Snacktime" . I always bop along in the car when it comes on my satellite radio kids channel. Both Melisa and I are on an ABC kick. You may have seen Melisa's Best of ABC post which featured ABC themed room decor but in a cool, modern way. She also featured these great graphic tees by bioME. Founded by two architectural designers in Venice, CA, bioME tees and onesies are inspired by the constant visual learning processes inherent in all children combined with an appreciation for nature’s beauty and diversity. They say, "The products not only serve functional purposes but also act as an exercise in imagination and learning, all the while remaining respectful of the planet that inspires the designs." The bioME mantra is to be environmentally and socially sensitive. All products are made with 100% certified, undyed/unbleached organic cotton and fabricated in sweatshop-free facilities, the onesies are tagless and preshrunk. The new bioME 5 Alphabet infant onesies retail for $26 and the original toddler short sleeve tees (for big brothers and sisters) are $28. bioME is offering up one Animal Alphabet tee or infant onesie of choice for today's giveaway . And just when I am convinced modern is the way to go, I fall in love with vintage all over again! Budding children's room designer Carmen Raynor has a knack for taking the sweet innocence of the 50's & 60's and creating timeless children's rooms. Carmen has recently launched her Sydney based interior design firm, Retro Rooms - for modern kids!  Here's a peek of her son's cowboy room with a vintage twist... Jake, 5 years old, Sydney, Australia What was the inspiration for the room? When I think back to my childhood in the 70's, I remember the cowboy imagery on so many things belonging to my younger brothers - and luckily my son loves it too! When I saw the duvet cover from Cath Kidston I knew I had found the piece that the room was going to revolve around. I picked the turquoise and red colours from the fabric and had the lockers and bookshelves painted to match. The artwork is a mixture of original paintings and old advertising posters from the 1950's. I constantly search ebay for vintage cowboy toys and items. Luckily there is enough storage in the room to hide all the unsightly modern toys! What best describes your decorating style? Eclectic, with a vintage twist. Please share with us paint colors, shops & suppliers. The main wall colour is Dulux Plaster and the bookshelves and lockers are painted in Dulux Hot Lips (red) and Jaded (turquoise). The duvet cover is from Cath Kidston. …

Blogging is such a blast! As we continue to grow Project Nursery, we meet so many great people along the way. (By the way, have you checked out our new and improved website?). One of those really neat people happens to be Beth Powell of Bibzees. Now Beth knows style. Just check out her eco-friendly, smart designs for baby and toddler. Beth's love of design has recently rubbed off on her daughter Olivia, a budding fashionista and today we take a tour of her big girl room... What was your inspiration for the room? My passion is fashion and having been lucky enough to attend Fashion Week last September (DVF and Tracy Reese!!!), I returned ready to decorate accordingly! What best describes your decorating style? I would describe my daughter's room as High Glam, but the rest of my home has a more contemporary/urban look. Share with us choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc. I was using a lot of what we already had like the white chest, but to glam it up I changed out the white knobs with some crystal knobs that I found at Home Depot. The chandelier was also a great stumble upon at Home Depot as well. I found the crystal lamp at Home Goods and thought it worked well with the new knobs. Since the only thing my daughter insisted on was the color purple, I chose a shade that reminded me of black raspberry ice cream from Sherwin Williams. It's …
