I may be aging myself here but I remember going on weekly trips to the grocery store with my mother and staring at the tiny section of organic produce, thinking to myself, "why would anyone want these less then perfect veggies?" Across the aisle were heaps and heaps of produce that looked pumped up to perfection. We all know the irony behind that one. Organic products have certainly become more mainstream these days and lots of eco-friendly products have hit the market. Today, being green doesn't mean sacrificing on style or appearance. Take children's furniture company Spot On Square for example. They launched their eco-friendly line of modern children's furniture and decor in 2007 and have been on a mission to bring eco-conscious, quality furniture to modern families. I think they have nailed the right mix of functionality, style and safety. Gotta say the price is right too! Check out the cool orange rocker and simple yet chic Hiya Shelving.

I am happy to announce that I am pregnant with baby number two! And now that my morning sickness is subsiding, I'm smiling again and the pep is back in my step!  In about two weeks, I'll learn the sex of my baby. I cannot wait to get this nursery makeover underway. I hope you'll follow along as I flip flop between design ideas, select colors and search high and low for more inspiring decor. In the meantime, I've been dreaming up gender-neutral design boards in my head and a buttery yellow is calling for me.  I've been searching for everything and anything yellow. I eventually had to stop and ask myself, "If yellow is so mellow, why is it so aggravating searching for fabulous yellow inspired nurseries on the worldwide web? And why are some people telling me that a yellow room represents depression? Here are few inspiring designs that are certain to delight both baby and me.

What human doesn't enjoy lounging in a hammock? Just last weekend my husband and I loaded the whole family in a friend's hammock and the kids loved it so much it became an obsession for the rest of the day. I've never given much thought to the history of the hammock but it actually was developed in Latin America over 800 years ago where it was used as the primary sleep apparatus. The hammock was also used for infants to soothe and rock to sleep.  Currently there are a few infant hammock sleep systems on the market but by far the sleekest to join the bunch is the Hushamok. Beautifully designed with a curved aluminum or wood frame, this hammock doesn't come cheap. At just over 400 dollars the Hushamok is an investment but most parents with a sleep challenged baby will shell out just about any amount of money to get a few more hours of rest. The Hushamok was developed for newborns up to 6 months or 22 pounds. The womb-like design of the hammock gently cradles baby while providing a comfortable, safe and soothing environment. Made from high quality pre-shrunk machine washable 100% cotton that is double-lined and back stitched. With such a stunningly modern design this  hammock doesn't have to be stuck out back between the trees. What do you think of the Hushamok? We'd love to know....

gift

Usually a week doesn't go by without a friend or relative asking me for gift ideas. I can usually come up with a few good suggestions but with at least one birthday party on the schedule every weekend for the little ones I sometimes need a little fresh thinking in the gift department too. Two British gals with backgrounds in public relations and journalism have started The Handpicked Collection as a way to make gift giving for all ages smart and simple. Their range of unusual and best of breed gifts has been chosen by a panel of experts including leading journalists from glossies such as Harpers Bazaar, In Style and Red as well as stylists and trendsetting entrepreneurs. The Handpicked Collection has recently launched their Birthday Reminder service. Just create a profile and add important dates that require gifts and the service will not only alert you by email of upcoming key dates but will also provide a tailored selection of gift ideas for the person involved according to the budget you set. Their list of Top Toys is sure to cause a few oohs and ahhhs.

Sometimes simple is better.  Mom Angela, created a room to grow with her son. So keeping it simple in the early stages allows her to do just that. We also think it's pretty clever that Angela took cues from Dylan's astrological sign for color inspiration. Now doesn't that give you something to consider? Child's name: Dylan Age: 8 weeks Location: Napa, California What was your inspiration for the room? I knew my son was going to be born in the month of March which makes him a Pisces and I wanted a very calming color since Pisces is a water sign and I also wanted something with a modern twist that he could grow with.... What best describes your decorating style? Clean, whimsical, modern. Share with us choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc. Please include links. Chandelier Decal found on www.etsy.com Silver Sage paint color from Restoration Hardware Chalkboard from Antique Store Keep Calm Carry On Poster from Etsy Crib Bedding from RH Baby & Child Furniture is custom made by my husband's family What is your favorite item(s) in the room? The Chalkboard...because I can use it for Dylan as he grows older with new messages/activities. Is there anything else you would like to share? I also have a glider that is not pictured as it hadn't arrived by the time the photos were taken!

2playroom

Do you recall the chalkboard playroom walls from the other week? Well here's a real family enjoying them! I recently exchanged emails with one of the fabulous "Material Girls Blog" Designers, Jill Seidner and she kindly shared a fun, chalkboard inspired playroom she designed for a Los Angeles family. When the Coleite Family hired me, they'd just purchased a new home in Los Feliz. Given the house had a large great room, they opted to convert the living room to a playroom. It was actually a good choice as the two main entrances to the room can be closed off by double doors. We painted, mixed in their existing furnishings, turned book cases into storage for toys, added the Flor carpet tiles, the chalkboard paint is always a fun touch, and voila: the formal living room became a great big playroom! It works for them & gets a ton of use - probably more usage then most people's living rooms ever do!  - Jill Seidner Client: Coleite Family Age:  2 girls,  ages 4 & 1 Location: Los Angeles, CA (Los Feliz) What was your inspiration for the room? To make a fun and functional playroom that would get a lot of use & abuse with this active family. I wanted to create a very cheerful and colorful space. What best describes your decorating style? Clean, simple, and lively. Please share with us choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc. Much of the furniture was a mix of the …
