First Birthday parties can take on a life of their own. I don't know what's more fun, the excitement of marking baby's first year or the thrill of having a party where adults are in on the action. North Carolina mother Keila dreamed up a party filled with robots and colorful candy treats for her son Aiden's first birthday. Here are all the details on this out of this world party. What is the theme of the party and why? Since before Aiden was even born I knew I wanted to throw him an out of this world party that no one had ever seen. I decided to do a "robot" theme because I loved the idea and it went great with my little one but also because I knew it would be a challenge to pull it together. Did you find inspiration from any particular photos or websites? Sure did! I did a random search online for "robot parties" and Hostess with the Mostess' website came up. I absolutely fell in LOVE! I was also inspired searching her blog to incorporate a candy buffet. I found Aiden's robot cake off of Flickr. Please share with us where you purchased your supplies. I found a few robot themed things at Target. Goody bags, stickers, etc. I also bought a few things from Party City. Ribbon, scrapbook paper and small things at Hobby Lobby and AC Moore. Glass containers and candy added to the party. What was was the most creative item you made for …

Today's Real Room makes Melisa and I two proud bloggers. The parents-to-be came across an alphabet themed wall from one of our past Real Room posts and it proved to be the inspiration they needed when designing their unborn baby's nursery. They are waiting to find out the baby's gender (so fun!), who is due on Mom's birthday (double fun!) and wanted to be sure the nursery was filled with vibrant energy. I have to say I absolutely love what they did with the lime green dresser, its given me a bit of inspiration to update my daughter's nursery furniture to make it new again. Welcome to Alphabet City! What was your inspiration for the room? The idea of doing an 'ABC' room actually came from Project Nursery's Real Room: A to Z post. I loved the alphabet wall. My friend, Casey, even called me one day asking if I had a 'U' yet! What best describes your decorating style? Very random...I start with one piece that I really like and go from there. My living room started from a container of paper scrapbooking flowers I saw at Michael's and my spare room started with a scrap of fabric. I don't like to go and purchase a room as you see it in a store. I'll find items at thrift stores, discount chains, up scale stores, relatives basements and make a lot of things myself! I couldn't find art for my living room, so I looked through pictures I had …

Mom Brooke developed her own mantra while designing her baby's nursery - the 3 C's:  Clean, Calm and Comfortable. We like to refer to this nursery design as Chic, Clutter-free and the best C of them all, Cost-Effective. Our favorite element? The cabinets that flank the sides of the crib. Now that's Clever design! Child's name: Wills Age: due in 4 weeks Location: New Orleans, LA What was your inspiration for the room? Theme: Elephants! I was inspired by a number of blogs I visited. I took a few ideas from these blogs and then incorporated my own style and look. I tried to keep it minimal and whimsical. What best describes your decorating style? Clean and contemporary with touch of traditional. Please share with us your choice of paint colors, furniture, art, diy tips, etc. Color of walls is a soft ecru. White, grey, avocado green and shades of blue were my color pallette. Changing table is a from family that we had painted. Art, mobile and banner were all found on Etsy. Bedding is from Serena and Lily. Monogrammed Sham is Leontine Linens. Rug came from FLOR. What is your favorite item(s) in the room? I love the monogrammed boudior because it adds such a personal touch. The elephant rocker "Elmer" is adorable. The tall cabinets are either side of the crib make the room. I also love the mobile because it is so delicate. The rug was a nice way to soften the room and make it cozy and …

I've just returned from vacation and I'm catching up on missed episodes of HGTV's Design Star in time for tonight's season finale. Last week was definitely controversial and I like to join to masses in saying that Lonni's room was indeed awesome. She so didn't deserve to have her show "canceled". This season however, Design Star did a nice job giving desginers the opportunity to create rooms for little people. While some were hits and others misses, here's a recap of  Dan's recent nursery makeover for celebrity Jason Priestly. You be the judge:

You don't get more wholesome then checked table cloths and blueberry pie. That was the idea behind this tractor themed baby shower for soon-to-be parents Lauren and Brett. Instead of letting the weather limit the party's decor, host Laura took the picnic and made it come alive inside her home. With a little creativity and her handy paper cutting tool, Laura turned mason jars, mini pies and paper plates into a picnic style baby shower for baby boy Nixon. Laura offers some great party planning tips along with all the details on this vintage picnic baby shower. Child's name: Nixon Age: TBD Location: Utah, my home What is the theme of the party and why? I decided to throw an indoor picnic and tractor themed baby shower for a long-time friend (it's far too hot in our neck of the woods this time of the year to party outside). Although she is having a boy, I wanted to steer clear of colors and motifs that were too kitschy or overdone. And, since it was a no guys party, I tried to create an environment and food that was "girly" to some degree , yet maintained a masculine feel in honor of baby Nixon. The color pallet consisted of orange, kelly green, yellow and blue jean blue. Overall I wanted guests to feel like they were at a farm or barnyard picnic with their friends. Did you find inspiration from any particular photos or websites? The whole idea came about after …

Our new friend Lonni Paul hit a home run last night on Design Star! We couldn't help but pay extra special attention because this week's challenge was near and dear: Kids Rooms! If you missed it, catch the episode here for awesome dinosaur or baseball themed inspiration. Now let's tell you a bit more about Lonni. She comes across as funny, warm and personable despite the made for TV editing which hasn't done her justice. She's a Beverly Hills interior designer to celebrity clients but some of her toughest demands come from being a mom of three! When asked about her Design Star experience, Lonni was grateful for the wonderful friendships she came away with from show. She also found it "amazing what you can pull together in a quick turn around. When time is running out, it's important not to second guess yourself. Know and trust what you are doing the first time around!" (Hear that expecting mom's with 6 weeks to go and a nursery to decorate!). While we will have to stay tuned to see if Lonni is HGTV's next Design Star, we can tell you that when she's not designing for clients, she's busy launching "planetlonni", a line of eco-chic and friendly furniture and accessories. To see more of Lonni's work, visit: www.lonnipauldesign.com. Here are some of Project Nursery's faves... And finally, our meeting with Lonni wouldn't be complete without getting some valuable design tips to pass along... Twin tip: People often think you need two of everything. Design …

Last week, we had the big reveal...We're expecting another boy! I can't believe it. The design part of my brain immediately thought, "So much for my black, white and yellow inspired girl nursery" but the next thought was "Yay for bunkbeds"! While this is totally premature since my baby is still in utero and my son is only 2.5, I can't help but fast forward and think about their future sibling bond and my lovely guestroom that gets to remain in tact. If you comb the web, theirs lots of inspiration out there. One of my favorites come from the blog Pink Wallpaper and her excellent custom built bunk bed round up: I know I can always count on the top modern nursery furniture designers for crazy cool bunkbed options (Argington, duc duc, Nurseryworks): The bunkbed selection offered at Posh Tots is but of course top notch! And while these don't exactly accomplish my goal of sharing, these inexpensive loft / tent bed designs look like a blast for my boys!
