Blogher 2010

We interrupt our fun design finds and inspirational party posts to share with you some personal highlights from our NYC trip to Blogher '10. Pam and I enjoyed over 7 years together in the Big Apple so coming back to town together was a real treat and a whole lot more exhausting with a couple of babies in tow. While the conference was jamming over at the Hilton New York with passionate blogging women and loads of corporate sponsors throwing swag our way, we couldn't help but get distracted by the amazing shopping, food and nightlife New York is known for. I kicked off the week with a lovely dinner in the West Village with the wonderful Kelly Lyden of  The Party Dress. It was great to finally meet in person after all this time. Unfortunately, our non-stop conversation made me forget to pull out my camera and snap a pic - darn it! Just 24hrs before Blogher was about to commence, Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio (As seen above in Kate Spade) jumped on a plane to come to NYC for the opportunity to meet the Martha Stewart team and attend the conference. First order of business was to drag Kim downtown with me to Soho for lunch and power shopping. We had good luck at DKNY and particularly enjoyed Jonathan Adler Soho for both their air conditioning and new kiddie line, Jonathan Adler Jr. That evening I scored an invite to the Martha Blogger party (thanks TKS) where I was delighted …

Kids Stick On Labels

"Back to School" mode has switched into high gear around here and I have to say its stressing me out a bit. With one heading to Kindergarten I've got a list of things to get for her before the official first day of school. Just this morning we were co-surfing the Internet for the perfect lunch bag. She wanted Hello Kitty, I preferred mod dots, we compromised on cute and sassy owl. At least I can check one thing off the list. It got me thinking about how we were both going to keep track of these new items. I mean its a triumph if a headband stays around more then a couple of weeks and those suckers can be expensive. Thankfully I've discovered Emily Press Labels. They literally let you stick in style. Emily Press Labels has created stylish, original label designs for modern kids, hip youths and savvy parents. What is so great about Emily Press Labels is that there are not only many cute designs to choose from but the labels come in various sizes and label types. There are the super strong adhesive stick-on type which are waterproof and dishwasher safe which are great for just about anything. The tag-a-tag labels are designed to stick right on clothing tags and not wash off in the laundry. Perfect for all the extra clothes you end up sending off to preschool for those pesky "accidents" and there are even the old school iron-on type labels.  Don't miss the Back to …

Provance-Collection

I have been using Newport Cottages Furniture in nurseries and children's rooms for over seven years now. I highly recommend the quality of their products and appreciate the attentive customer service of the company.  Their furniture pieces are benchmade  (made from start to finish by a skilled carpenter) in California from select hardwoods.  Quality craftsmanship techniques used include mortise & tenon joinery, rail & stile construction, and inlaid and raised panels.  You might not notice this craftsmanship from afar, but up close these pieces of furniture are built to last for generations and to grow with your child.  Another nice feature is that the screws on the cribs, beds and case pieces are all hidden and not visible on the outside of the furniture. The Celine Crib painted in mocha featuring Maddie Boo Anna bedding Since the furniture is made of hardwoods, the cribs and beds are very sturdy and let you know that your child is safe when they shake their crib rails or bounce on their beds.   Styles of furniture range from the Nantucket cottage look to modern clean lines to their newest collection inspired by the romance of Provence. Newport Cottages was originally known for it's beach cottage look.  Some of their most popular styles are still the Taylor Collection (pictured above in the 6-Drawer Dresser with scalloped bottom), and the Cape Cod Beadboard Crib pictured below. They made twin to king size beds as well as wonderful bunk beds.  This style with the Panel Twin Over …

Aquatic Bedroom Design

Every year there's a special seven days when our home television set is tuned to one riveting channel. It's a time where the beauty of the mystical sea meets the suspense of the ocean's most feared creature. Yes my friends, it's Shark Week! In honor of our "Jaws"-dropping friend, this week's Gallery Round Up is dedicated to aquatic room design. Here are some Real Gallery uploads that made a splash! Michael's Undersea Toddler Room is so realistic I found my self holding my breath! Zack's Surf Shack just sent out a Shark alert! Surfers Beware!

orange nursery

When I was three my parents bought a house with plans to remodel. I begged and plead that they leave the built-in Sunkist Soda orange bunk beds that were installed by the previous owners. Declaring that they were unsafe, mom and dad proceeded with their demolition project. For years after that I proclaimed orange as my favorite color. Perhaps it was a psychological plea for the return of my citrus-toned sleeping quarters? When rounding up the Real Gallery this week a few orange rooms caught my eye. This Modern Nesting Nursery was designed around an incredible Anthropologie rug. The designer opted for this modern color choice in lieu of powder pink. I call dibs on Sloan's Nursery when Sloan is out of town! If you've read my posts before you know I'm a fan of vintage. Sloan's orange glider and hodge podge frame collection make this room a gem. Let's not overlook the designer's fantastic choice to mismatch bedding. What are your thoughts? Don't forget to share your comments with the nursery owners and rate these rooms. Are they 5 elephant-worthy?

plum and coral and turquoise gender neutral nursery design

Lately, Little Crown Interiors has been asked for an increasing number of gender neutral nurseries.  Today, we want to share some of our nursery design ideas about gender neutral nurseries with the Project Nursery community! Pick a Color - Any Color! Don't feel confined by green and yellow (although those are definitely lovely colors for a gender neutral nursery).  Not long ago, we were asked for a aqua, brown and orange gender neutral nursery, and while those colors have historically been reserved for boy's rooms, we found that this nursery design functioned perfectly for a girl's room too (we're still waiting for completed photos - and to find out whether a boy or girl is sleeping in this nursery). Here's another example of a very unique gender neutral nursery color scheme that we recently did for an adventurous client in New York City! Pattern-Schmattern. Don't be afraid of florals!  Historically feminine, we've found that there are tons of great ways to include floral patterns in a gender neutral nursery.  If the pattern is the right color, it can definitely be made to work.  Here's a great example of a nursery design we're completing for another one of our clients.  This nursery design features floral patterns throughout the room in the bedding and all of the custom textiles. There's Nothing Wrong With A Theme! While it seems that "theme" rooms don't have the popularity they once had, we promise that you can feel comfortable creating a theme room.  Particularly in the …

Nourish Bottles

Our name lends itself to the nursery but baby design goes well beyond furniture and decor. Smart design is our blogging mission and the smart Mom behind Nourish, Lara Hodgson, has created a product that is not only designed beautifully but serves great purpose for busy parents everywhere. As I gear up for a three week trip to NYC with a baby and toddler, I am overcome by a nervous energy. I have flashes of a loud, whining toddler and a fidgety lap baby screaming for the bottle. (Of course getting through airport security with all my gear and with someone known for not wanting to take off his shoes is a whole other nightmare). I can't tell you how many times I have fed my baby more than usual while on the plane just to spare sleeping passengers from his cry or in an effort to prevent ear pain. And I am sure it grosses you out like it does me, when I have no choice but to rinse the used bottles in the plane's bathroom (I do try to use bottled water for this). Then having to dismantle three internal pieces of the bottle on my lap while mixing formula is indeed a royal pain. So enough of my complaining! Baby formula ready spring-water bottles by Nourish are here to save my travel day. Nourish bottles are being featured this month in Parents Magazine as a way to keep your gear germ-free! Why is this product so ingenious? The Nourish bottle design …

Deer Crib Bedding

This week's Gallery Round Up is inspired by an old flick I recently watched starring Gregory Peck, Turner Classic Movie's "Star of the Month". Though I wouldn't recommend showing this 1946 film to the kids until you preview it yourself, I was particularly inspired by the sweetness of the relationship between young Jody and his deer. Here are some fawn friendly nurseries I found by browsing our Real Rooms Gallery. What movies have inspired you? Can you find all the deer in this "Oh Deer!" nursery? True to the deer's quiet ways, the designer was subtle with appearances. On the contrary, the designer of "North Woods" Nursery opted for a fun and colorful forest scene. I think I see a little yearling peeking from behind the window!
