Woodland Nursery with Gold and Silver Stripes and Stars

I absolutely love designing, crafting, and creating beautiful things. This was my first baby and I was on the search for a crib that would be different than what you normally see and good quality. I wanted something gender neutral. I stumbled upon this beautiful crib at rhbaby Restoration Hardware Baby and Child’s website and fell in love. I tried to talk myself out of it because it was pricey for a crib. I decided to keep looking but I couldn’t find anything else that I could fall in love with. So I decided to go with my first love. I knew I wanted a wall of stars but I also wanted stripes. I was concerned that the both together would be too busy, especially in a small room. Then I was on the search for themes that I could incorporate in and I came up with a Woodland Theme. I loved the animal photos from Restoration Hardware but they where way overpriced. I was so happy to stumble upon a shop on Etsy that had similar photos at the fraction of the cost.  I took forever to  determine what size pictures I would put on the wall. The animal photos come in different sizes. I end up going with 12 8×10. I had found the garland from hobby lobby but I had to remove the pink. I stumbled upon the teal blue elephant and giraffe and that’s when I decided teal blue would be my accent color. I tend to get carried away with hanging pictures on the wall. I left one wall without photos. I’m happy with how it all came together at the end. Now only if I could get my little one to sleep in there.

Blair’s Blushing Nursery

This is our second child and second girl! Since the gender of our first child was a surprise, we didn’t have much to work with, design wise. This time around we decided to find out the gender and we couldn’t wait to design the perfect room for another baby girl. We knew we wanted blush pink and gold accents to create a soft, sophisticated and angelic look, and aimed to keep it simple and sweet. We loved the way the floral ‘B’ turned out, which was handmade by momma, and we used inter-changeable frames which are perfect for a quick and easy transition as baby grows. We kept a lot of the same furniture from baby girl No. 1, but purchased a new white dresser, which we painted the hardware to add elements of gold. The mirror used was an old mirror that we also painted the same shade of gold to pair well with her dresser. We purchased a few decor pieces and  incorporated a few handmade signs used for her “Baby Sprinkle” that helped pulled it all together.

Harper’s Floral Whimsy Nursery

When I found out I was having a girl, I knew I wanted to go GIRLY! After a very rough-and-tumble boy, I knew it was time for florals and pinks. My jumping off point was the gorgeous Jolie Wallpaper from The Project Nursery Shop. Heart eyes for days! I quickly decided that everything else needed to be fairly neutral with a very clean design and minimal pattern and wall decor. We wanted a very soft gray paint color with pops of gold and just a little bit of pink.
My favorite part of the nursery has to be the gorgeous wallpaper, but a close second is the super-sweet hand-lettered name wall sign from Six Eleven Co. A few other notes – I tried ordering several different more budget-friendly drapes, but ultimately landed with RH Baby & Child’s drapes, which were a bit of an investment for me (hello high ceilings!) but were SO worth it. They are amazing quality and block the light so perfectly during nap time.
I fell for the Babyletto Hudson crib long ago and think that it’s clean lines and modern look are perfect paired with the whimsical floral wallpaper.
I’m always looking for ways to stay a little more organized so the baby shoe organizer DIY was a fun project. Take a simple tension rod and small curtain hooks, spray paint them gold (if you like gold as much as me!) and hang your baby shoes for easy finding. Side note: the shelves above the glider were another easy project – bought them from IKEA and spray painted the brackets (originally silver) gold for a chic look.
What a fun project was for this to work on for our sweet baby girl!

Fiesta Second Birthday Party

Austin turned two this year and it was a wild FIESTA!!!! The party was a complete hit and he had such a great time! He was one happy and adorable birthday boy!! A few weeks before the party, I took an adorable photo of Austin in a sombrero and ordered a PDF version of his invitations from katiedidcards.
I’m not going to lie, being 9 months pregnant while throwing a party for 30 adults and 15 kids was a little ambitious, but I paced myself the week before and luckily pulled it off without going into labor! :)
I decided to get the party catered and purchased my cakes instead of baking them myself, so that helped tremendously. You can never go wrong with a good old fashion Taco Bar, so we had Moe’s Southwest Grill supply the Taco Bar and ingredients for Nachos. Moe’s also provided cinnamon chips and I picked up a Chocolate Cake, Caramel Tres leches cake and cookies from Costco.
The Serape blanket I used as a table cloth was purchased from Amazon as well as the mini Mexican Sombreros, mini Maracas, small Fiesta Donkeys and Mexican banners. The FIESTA letter balloons was from Steph Shives Studio and a lot of the decor came from Party City and/or Hobby Lobby. We had a bubble maker cranking out bubbles and a piñata full of candy for the kids. Austin was an extra lucky birthday boy when his final hit to the piñata was the hit that knocked it to the ground. His response was priceless; He just stood there in disbelief and screamed “WOW!!!”
Each of Austin’s guests received a take home gift that consisted of a beach bucket, crayons, a coloring book, a ball, bubbles and a carnival sucker.
Thanks to all of Austin’s friends and family who helped make his special day, extra special! Time can go ahead and slow down now!

David Bowie Golden Years Nursery

I’d like to think we all have that one artist who has touched our life in such a profound way that it has helped shape us into the individual we are today. For me that artist is David Bowie.
I discovered David Bowie when I was 6 years old. My father would play his records in our den. I was instantly in love. Over the years I learned about the man behind the music and developed a deep respect for his incredible talent. He was a true creative genius. He was never afraid to express himself in the most raw & explosive ways. He has always been a main source of inspiration and comfort for me and I wanted to share that with my daughter.
This room was quite a challenge. I particularly wanted to showcase Bowie’s song Golden Years. For me this song speaks of youth, beauty & love. It’s fun and always makes me want to dance. I felt it was a happy base for the overall Bowie theme.
I wanted the Bowie theme to be obvious but I didn’t want to create a shrine. I wanted to make sure it felt like a baby’s room and I wanted to pay homage to my daughter’s name, Rose. I felt the room should take on a modern feel. Modern is not my usual decorating forte. I tried to achieve the look with simple and clean decor, Lucite accents (the curtain rod and the lamp) and some geometric patterns. I think it ended up being more of an eclectic mix of modern and traditional.
I started with a color pallet, lots of gold and white with accents of dusty rose and blue. Bowie transcended gender so I purposely included both of the traditional boy & girl colors of pink and blue. The gold is in reference to Golden Years and the white helps to drive the modern feel.
I added a minor theme of stars throughout the room. I have always had a thing for stars (my one and only tattoo is of a small star on my foot). The gold stars also pay homage to the Starman. Which was a huge part of the Bowie persona.
There are a few key pieces of the room that I absolutely love.
* The Bowie watercolor painting. It was done by a local artist, James Valdez. I discovered it in a coffee shop one weekend, months after the project began. It was perfect. I couldn’t believe my luck at finding such a one of a kind piece.
* My brother (http://www.anthonyherreradesigns.com/) created the typographic print. It’s the Starman’s face created by the Golden Years lyrics. It was his baby shower gift to me. He’s incredibly talented. He’s the man behind the Star Wars Snowflakes.
* The white accent pillow with a lyric from Golden Years, “Never look back, Walk tall Act fine”, I had made using another local artist, Jaime Robertson ( http://janddgifts.com/ ) She did an incredible job.
* The David Bowie doll I found on etsy. It was made in Ireland.
* The framed print of Bowie in the blue suit I bought at a museum exhibit in London. My husband and I were visiting Paris several years ago. We went to London for one day solely so I could see the David Bowie Is exhibit. The exhibit was incredible. I love how this piece which was purchased years and years ago fits perfectly in the room.
* The pink dresser was part of my husband’s grandparent’s bedroom set. I sanded and repainted it a dusty rose color and added the crystal knobs. I love being able to incorporate family heirlooms into the girl’s room.
* The gold crib was a must. I had seen a few blog tutorials that made painting a crib gold seem simple. It wasn’t quite that simple and 6 months later my garage is still covered in a thin layer of gold dust but I love the way it turned out and I really think it helps bring the room together.
The room had originally been a light turquoise blue. The people who lived in the house before us had painted the entire room this color. When I say the entire room I mean everything… walls, ceiling & closet. After 2 weeks, 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint we finally got the room back to white. But then it was too white. So I added the one gold wall. The gold turned out a bit darker than I had hoped but I think the star decals helped to lighten it up and tie it to the room.

Landon’s Party Like a Pineapple 1st Birthday Party

I have always loved pineapples and everything they stand for—tropical places, summertime, and fun! A few years ago, I saw a pineapple-themed party hosted by the lovely Jenny Cookies, and I fell in lovvvvvve! Since then, pineapples & pineapple parties have been everywhere, and I have enjoyed seeing all of the different ideas online, especially on Pinterest. And off course, as soon as I found out we were pregnant & having a summer baby, I knew I’d plan the first birthday theme around pineapples.

Rachel – Blue is for Girls Nursery

I knew I didn’t want a pink room for my daughter. I have nothing against pink and I used it as an accent color; however, I am just not a pink kinda girl. So I found my inspiration photo on pinterest, a gorgeous light and airy room and light green and some gold accents. I knew that I wanted to do a two tone room with a chair rail and crown molding on the bottom half to add a feminine touch. I went through about 20 paint samples (including pink) and nothing ever looked right. It was too blue, too grey, too green. I couldn’t find the perfect color, and I am normally very good with colors. 9 out of 10 times the second a color catches my eye, that’s it, it’s the perfect shade for the project. So I went back to pinterest and found a navy blue room. I told my husband that night and he thought I was crazy (he thinks that about most of my ideas and always eats his words). I went paint shopping the next day, fell in love with one like I usually do but still a second sample to be sure and the next morning chose the one I knew I would pick.
Yes navy blue is dark and generally a boy color, but in a girls room it is so cozy. Rachel’s room has a lot of natural light so it doesn’t feel dark. Instead you walk in and feel at home. The crown molding and creamy white on the bottom half of the walls helps lighten the room and adds a classic sweetness. My accent colors were pink (Rachel pink which is perfect for my daughter, Rachel), mint (sweet mint, one of my go to colors) and gold. Because I love diy projects and refinishing furniture, I had to add my personal touches in her room. The dresser was from the set my parents got for the wedding almost 40 years ago and her bookshelf was the top of an old hosier cabinet that I found at Brimfield Antique Show (my happy place). I added a gallery wall above the dresser and changing table with some prints. Added a cover of shelves above the glider for added storage. The picture above the bed I fell in love the second I saw it. It was at the Eclectic Collection (an awesome antique store by me) and I fell in love because I have a son as well and I could just see the two of them in a couple years at the beach and taking a similar picture. The white and gold frame just blended in nicely with the rest of the room colors also. The bed was a hand me down and in there until we moved her brother into the bed and could move his crib into her room (that happened shortly after pictures). And then there are the dumbo pictures. They don’t really go with the rest of the room, but I thought they were so darn sweet and had loved them for a couple years so I had to include them.  I love the way her room turned out and every time we are in there playing I love the way she looks at everything. She can really grow into this room and it will still be gorgeous when she’s 18 – of course the accessories will have changed by then.
