Marshal’s nursery is a perfect mix of rustic, industrial, and neutral elements. His nursery has been our favorite room in the home and we spend most of our time in here. This week, Marshal turned 3 months old and to document this time in our lives, we decided to have an in-home photo session. Today I wanted to share our design process of Marshal’s nursery to hopefully inspire others and to give some helpful DIY tips.
The first step was to prep the room. We cleared out and sold all our office furniture in order to make the nursery. We caulked, spackled, and painted all the trim and doors a fresh new white, painted the closet walls gray, and the bedroom walls a gray/blue color. We put in a new ceiling fan, hung our white wood wallpaper (from Wayfair) and then cleaned the entire room from top to bottom.
The next step was to plan out everything before we started buying! The hardest part for me was finding boy crib bedding that I liked. I knew I wanted something neutral and cozy, but I also wanted it to have more of a design element than just plain colored bedding. I finally found our sheep quilt and matching crib skirt at Pottery Barn. After finding the bedding, deciding on everything else just fell into place. The two pillows in the nursery are both from Target and the rug is from Amazon. I loved how everything matched perfectly with the bedding.
We found our crib, nightstand, dresser, and dresser top at BuyBuyBaby for an amazing price. We loved the gray, rustic element it brought to the room and I knew it would look perfect next to the white wood wallpaper we hung. I originally wanted a gliding chair to go in our reading corner, but I overestimated the size of our room, and ended up painting a wooden rocking chair that was gifted to us in black.
We decided on bringing an industrial element to the room later on in the process, after purchasing the hanging book storage from Wayfair. My dad and stepmom made us the curtain rods, floating shelves, and hooks from plumbing pipes and then we painted it all with metallic dark steel spray paint. Our curtains are three $5 white twin sized flat sheets from Walmart. We attached them to the plumbing piped curtain rods by using curtain clips purchased from Amazon. I loved the way they turned out and the price was amazing!
The hanging basket in the corner we made using baskets found at Ross and some white string. We also purchased the laundry basket from Ross. The growth chart and the wooden sign hanging above the dresser was purchased through Etsy. The wall sconces we found on Amazon and instead of wiring them, we attached Velcro to puck lights and placed them inside the sconce. The puck lights are remote controlled and the amount of light is perfect for changing diapers at nighttime. The milestone garland hanging above the dresser was purchased at Pottery barn.
And 3ish months later we finally had a completed nursery! A lot of the extra stuff you see on the shelves were gifted to us at our baby shower. I hope my post helps someone in designing their nursery and my DIYs help save some money in the process. Good luck!
